I swear that most of MG> them are just thrown in as fillers. DE> Are you saying that you don't think that the articles are true? DE> Unfortunately, they are all too true, and too frequent, and cancelling DE> your newspaper will not make them go away. Of course they are true, and ongoing. They are also sensationalistic. Every damned day has stories about adults brutalizing children, or children brutalizing each other. It has ceased to be news. I don't feel an obligation to know every horror that is occurring. DE> As this is the Mystery echo, and as the vast majority of mystery DE> novels deal with crimes, I find your logic to be quite puzzling! 1. The crimes are fiction. 2. I don't read mysteries dealing with brutality. I really like Lt. Mendoza. SG> It is hard to keep track of the characters, though. Mendoza is always SG> working on more than one crime, which can be confusing. Another SG> author who switches characters/crimes frequently is Ed McBain. I SG> found his books more annoying than entertaining. I went back to the first chapter and started taking notes in an effort to keep them all straight. In the first 40 pages, I had accumulated notes on almost as many characters. It is impossible to tell, in a lot of cases, which ones are going to come up again later in the story. Well, such is the case with police work, I suppose. I gave up on the notes and am just plodding through it the best I can. I have only read a few of Ed McBain's stories. I liked the ones I read, but they aren't something that would cause me to be impatient for more. I'm only halfway through the Dell Shannon book and as of now, I'd prefer a McBain book.
