After all, when you read the MA> article below you will see it has had an affect on her writing. My, my! That was a piece of news that had so far escaped my scan. Too bad. Sounds like Mr. FBI might have been wrapped a little tightly to begin with and if the story re Cornwell's affair with his wife are true, would sure be enough to send him careening over the edge. It's fascinating to me that he is of the opinion that a pre-meditated murderer is a better candidate for parenting than a person having an affair (even with a memeber of the same sex!). Obviouslt, rationality was not a long suit here. MA> There was a MA> little disussion on DorothyL but it has been very polite. Probably because MA> the authors on the lists are thinking "gee I wouldn't want my private life MA> splashed all over the Washington Post and People magazine. No kidding! But obviously, there are several professions success in which makes one a "public person" even in one's private life. Regardless, I just hope her books improve! I thouroughly enjoyed the first two or three but have been becoming more disenchanted with each succeeding ones. * JABBER v1.2 * REALITY.SYS Corrupted: Re-boot universe? Out of almost twenty people that I personally know who have read her books, I've heard that reaction from one person. You make it two. Truthfully, I don't understand my own positive reaction. I'm very squeamish, and so is my sister. Neither of us is good about watching anything gorey on-screen, and we generally shun that kind of thing in a book. But the forensic aspect of it... the piecing together what happened after the fact... for us, I guess the fascination with the scientific data that can be obtained overcomes the repulsion. Again, I can't explain my reaction... I hated science in school... Especially biology. Go figure! :) So, have you read any of Stout's/Goldsborough's Nero Wolfe series? There's much more of a focus on character study and lots less on the murder itself. Is that what you prefer? I love those books! In fact, I gave the books to Betty. I liked the Cornwells a lot. They reminded me of the TV show Quincy, which we still watch on reruns. It was one of the few times a mystery novel took that sort of approach although the overall quality of the novels themselves have gone downhill. It was an area that was not written about much but I think a lot more authors have jumped on the bandwagon and are now adding forensics to their stories. The only other author that does a supurb job in that genre is Aaron Elkins and I'm pretty sure he came along long before Cornwell. His "Icy Clutches" and "Queens Arms" give the reader an excellent look at pathology without too much gore. <<< Debbie >>> --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: chocolate, Chocolate, CHOCOLATE: Roch, NY (1:2613/321.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: DBT00003 Date: 07/23/96 From: MAUREEN GOLDMAN Time: 08:00pm \/To: PATRICIA FERRARA (Read 3 times) Subj: Summer reading On (22 Jul 96) Patricia Ferrara wrote to HELEN FLEISCHER... I read the first Cornwell book, thought it was well-written. I figured that I might pick up another because the work details were interesting and detailed, but every time I passed them in the library ... well, I didn't. These victims died a horrible death, and Cornwell went out of her way to emphasize the sadistic methods. The least of it was the surgeon-violinist who had her fingers broken before her attacker got to the really nasty stuff.
