KW> I certainly do! Though some science fiction and fantasy writers would KW> disagree... ;-) The fantasy writers are a seperate issue, but a good SF writer *should* agree. In SF, you are welcome to toss in stuff that doesn't happen to exist yet, but you are expected to get the stuff that *is* currently known right. An SF story that gets the science wrong fails as SF, whatever its virtues may be in other areas. A lot of SF on TV is excreable for this reason. Rather than find out what we *do* currently understand about the way the universe works and come up with plausible developments based on that, they just toss in some techno-babble and wave their hands a lot. ST Voyager is the current worst offender but not the only one. Even in fantasy, authenticity can apply. A good fantasy is carefully worked up, and the fantastic elements are well integrated. If there is magic, it behaves according to rules, (even if the characters don't know what they are, which is often a plot element.) A good job of world building can provide that sort of authenticity, even if the setting doesn't (and *can't*) exist. --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 * Origin: * BlueDog BBS * (212) 594-4425 * NYC FileBone Hub (1:278/304) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: DAB00006 Date: 06/05/96 From: DEBBIE SHANKER Time: 06:20pm \/To: CATHERINE VANICEK (Read 4 times) Subj: Where is everybody? > To Debbie Shanker from Cate Vanicek & her laptop Siamese. > DS> Started Mary Higgins Clark's newest and was so put off by the first > DS> chapter, that I never finished it. She's another writer who seems to be very popular. Will see if I can find one of her books and try it. Are they all scary? I don't usually care too much for books that scare you. One of the reasons I've only read one Stephen King. What the heck, Jaws frightened me to death, but I couldn't put the book down either. You can believe I wouldn't go see the movie when it came out. Guess that's the sign of a good writer when they leave that much of an impression on you. However, I tend to go for something that has a bit of humor along with the story. I started a Stephen Diehl book the other day and could only get half way through it. Too much violence to suit me or maybe I wasn't in the mood for it.
