FR> SS> Patricia Cornwell is an author from Richmond, VA and a former member FR> SS> of the Richmond Police Department. She writes police procedurals, FR> SS> but her main charcter is a woman by the name of Kay FR> SS> Scarpetta. She is the Chief Medical Examiner. The stories FR> SS> are based on her level of procedures, and I have found them FR> SS> to be pretty true to form and VERY interesting. Her latest FR> SS> is called "From Potters Field" but I haven't started it FR> SS> yet!! One of her first novels was called "Body of FR> SS> Evidence". From Potters Field will not disappoint you! It is as well written and compelling as the rest of her books. BTW, her first was Post Mortem. FR> SS> Try her, she's wonderful!! She is that! *** SLMR 2.1a Precinct toilets stolen! Fred Runk seemed to be taking DER on a Cook's Tour... FR> DER> <> There is probably a White Hart in every fourth village! :) FR>Ah, but this is a special White Hart; not everyone can find it. And not FR>everyone who finds it can find it again. Hmmm. I shall have to cogitate on that for a bit..... FR> DER> I love the Dexter books...I like Morse's sardonic sense of humor. I FR> DER> also now think of John Thaw as Morse! If I saw him in something lse FR> DER> his character would probably be totally unbelievable! FR>I have seen him in something else, escapes me presently, and I did have FR>trouble dissociating him. He also was in the TV version of Peter Mayle's FR>books about living in Provence--I gather he played "Mayle." Someone else told me that too, but I didn't see it. FR> DER> I like Janek, also. There is another case of association...when I FR> DER> think of Janek, I think of Richard Crenna. :) FR>Yes, same here. Just read MIRROR MAZE, Bayer's latest Janek mystery. I FR>can't help but see him as Crenna either. A friend of mine insists that FR>Crenna was on TV years ago, on a 50s sitcon called OUR MISS BROOKS. renna FR>played a goofy teenager on that. I remember watching the show regularly, FR>but I can't connect Crenna with that character. I just put Mirror Maze down in my little book to order from the library. I just love being able to long on to the library, order what I want, and get it from the Post Office, about a block from my house, one or two days later! I got a couple that I had ordered in the mail yesterday. Both are written by PHILLIP MARGOLIN, one is GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN (just finished it, and thoroughly enjoyed it!) and AFTER DARK. He is a criminal defense attorney in Portland, OR and was apparently the first attorney to use the "battered wife syndrome" as a defense. FR>Ah, I'm a real devotee of SF, been so for many decades now. That's probably FR>why I like the period mysteries and history and anthro and cultural tudies FR>and so forth. Be a pretty dull world if we all liked reading the same stuff, huh? FR> DER> I did read,I think it was called The Rose?? It was made into a ovie FR>later with Sean Connery playing the monk or whatever he was. FR>Eco's THE NAME OF THE ROSE. Yes, loved it. Had all that good period, FR>historical stuff, and also I was raised Catholic. Loved the name of Sean FR>Connery's character, the english monk--Brother William of Baskerville. I FR>think Eco enjoyed sneaking that in there. That's it...THE NAME OF THE ROSE! I did enjoy that. Did you read CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR, I think the author's name is Jean Auel. It was one of a series. I liked the first one, the second was OK but didn't like any after that. FR>For a long time I saw Sherlock as Basil Rathbone, but no more. The PBS FR>Sherlock Holmes has taken over. I also liked the PBS version's portrayal of FR>Doctor Watson. I always felt the movie depiction made him out to be a FR>blithering idiot, which he clearly wasn't in Doyle's mind. I agree. FR> DER> Yes, to Miss Marple. Yuk, to Lord Peter! :) I also have enjoyed FR> DER> several of Somerset Maugham. FR>Somerset Maugham? Yes! I read an Anthology of his books one time and found most of them to be a good read! FR> DER> I also like the series with the woman CID Detective nspector...gad, FR> DER> it must be late, her name escapes me! Helen Mirren plays the lead. FR>ahhhh, PRIME SUSPECT? It's now showing up on MASTERPIECE THEATRE around FR>here. I guess somebody figured it would get a wider audience that way? Yep. Just saw the new one last week, or the week before. Another quality production. FR>Haven't read that much by Crichton, aside from TERMINAL MAN. One of these FR>days I will pick up his novel set in an alternate universe, one when the FR>Germans had invaded and conquered England. Haven't read that one. FR> DER> I also have a penchant for NY Times crossword puzzles and those done FR> DER> by Will Weng. As you can imagine, I spend very little time ondering FR> DER> what to do next! :) FR>And do you time yourself as another devoted crossword does is wont to do? Of course! . I also do them in pen! I generally like the Morse series, but in some of the stories he really reats Sargent Lewis as an incredible dolt. I reality, Morse isn't so much brilliant as he just stumbles around until his lastest lady friend gets murdered and then he often flukes onto the murderer's identity. DER> Michael Crichton, A CASE OF NEED. Crichton has written some good DER> books but I still think that THE TERMINAL MAN was his best. FR> Haven't read that much by Crichton, aside from TERMINAL MAN. One of FR> these days I will pick up his novel set in an alternate universe, one FR> when the Germans had invaded and conquered England. Which Crichton book is that? You aren't thinking of Len Deighton's SS-GB by chance? I've read most of the books by both authors and that scenario sounds more like Deighton than Crichton. I like both authors, but prefer Deighton; especially the interlocking triligies of 'Game Set Match' and 'Hook Line Sinker'; and then 'Winter: A Berlin Family' to fill in the gaps and ackground of the main characters. He leaves enough unsaid and unknowable to make his world of espionage seem quite real. Bob 8-{) --- Blue Wave/Max v2.20 * Origin: TechTalk; Calgary, Alberta.
