I discovered this Thanks for the informative and interesting review. I had just seen that book on the shelves--pb version--and was wondering about getting it. I had read one of her Felse mysteries before-FLIGHT OF A WITCH--I think it was. I found it ok, but didn't think it anything special enough to continue with the series. I would agree, and also with the list of repeated themes - adding to them, the dire consequences of "getting above yourself." But then I find many of the newer British writers too determined to be grimly psychological. It can make a good read in small doses, but when you read several at once, it becomes a bit much. I should add that I did enjoy the PD Jameses the first time I read them, but my disappointment came when I went back and re-read them. jan` --- * OFFLINE 1.56 * Nostalgia just ain't what it used to be ... --- FidoPCB v1.4 [ff238/x] * Origin: OnLine Now Thunder Bay ON, Canada (807)-345-1531 (1:229/510) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: D5Q00004 Date: 05/19/96 From: JAN PERKINS Time: 05:13pm \/To: FRED RUNK (Read 2 times) Subj: hello? It also, in my edition, either suffered from the worst copy editor in the history of the genre or from none at all, thus exposing James's odd notions of punctuation.) I think the "colony of writers" bit was done better by Josephine Tey, though. Isn't that _Five Red Herrings_ or something similar. I agree that Tey did it better. But my all time favourite Tey is _Miss Pym Disposes_, set in a remedial gymnast training school. I did time (the only way to describe it) studying and working in the British hospital system of 20 odd years ago, and she got the atmosphere of the place perfectly. It's also a book with a real surprise at the end, but one that is very logical. jan --- * OFFLINE 1.56 * Where there's a will, there's a body. --- FidoPCB v1.4 [ff238/x] * Origin: OnLine Now Thunder Bay ON, Canada (807)-345-1531 (1:229/510) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: D5Q00005 Date: 05/20/96 From: MAUREEN GOLDMAN Time: 09:00am \/To: FRED RUNK (Read 2 times) Subj: hello?
