Hecky Thump, it's Jean Arkwright! >>>> I find it fascinating to watch the heirachy forming and and it's >>>> especially fast to develop with mares. One of our JP> Shamazon is a 23yr old Anglo Arabian mare ........ SHE is Boss JP> Horse and she lets everyone KNOW she is. However, here lately Mr X JP> (Arabian gelding) is trying to "take over" ... sometimes he succeeds JP> in proving he's "boss" ..... other times Shamazon puts he back in his JP> place The 'top horse' also seems to vary on the fitness of the others. One of ours, Tokki, is top of the heap most of the time, but if she's feeling under the weather she can't be doing with bossing the others about enough, and she ends up right at the bottom of the heirachy. JP> Mr X was suppose to have been cut when he was born (we didn't own JP> him then -- I got him when he was a few months old) .... he You cut them that young? In the UK most are cut at around 6 months - year, they develop better, though you do get some that go bolshie. JP> demanstrates the "bit of a little man" as you put it from time to time JP> with our other 2 mares ..... I know exactly what you are talking about JP> "strutting about and rounding them up" ... it IS funny to watch. These JP> are the times that he's being the "boss" and Shamazon is letting him JP> do it ..... Interesting sight today. I let three of our biggish mares out (around 14-15h) one 17h TB gelding and a purebred shetland out into our biggest field. They pottered off to the other end (about half a mile). When i'd done the mucking out I decided to put some hay out as the grass is mostly mud (the rain we've had in the past month is astounding!). Went out into the field and spread it around, then gave them a shout. Five heads shot up, Basil (The Shettie) started off first, then all four galloping along behind him. Perfect formation - four abreast and this little thing out front with his legs going like mad! Awe-inspiring sight - galloping flat out, mud and water spraying everywhere, tails high, ears forward. Was so fascinated I didn't realise I was in their way... Simon (A bit muddy) ... She'll be all right.
