Or could it be that in the log-pulling contests, you've seen stallions and geldings, while the carriage horses Jean saw were mares? Lipizzaner mares were once used as carriage horses. I get the impression from some of the books I've read that they might seem like a different breed, to an untrained eye that was only used to seeing the stallions.... --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: EGX00002 Date: 12/27/97 From: MIKE MAY Time: 09:57am \/To: JOHN ROOKER (Read 0 times) Subj: Happy, Merry etc... -> I will if I remember to pay my CRP.. :-) You better Pay UP! -> My cats hate carrots.. All -> the horses that i have seen were yellowy or creamy yellow -> coloured with very dark stripes; which I assumed were black. -> -> Grey and brown dun, though,I am puzzled by. -> Does this mean that the stripes are grey or -> brown, or that there are actually grey-bodied norwegian fjords out -> there somewhere? Here are the descriptions of the colors we use for registering the horses. COLOR AND MARKING: The OFFCOLOR references below refer to the dark color in the forelock, mane and tail, and the dark dorsal stripe along the back. BROWN DUN is the most common Fjord Horse color. Along with the dun color ody, the off-color is black or dark brown. The face above the muzzle usually has brown highlights with the muzzle area being very light in color. The dun body color can vary from light tan to dark brown but always retains a tan or brown shade. RED DUN horses have reddish brown off-color, never black. In some cases they may have a completely white forelock, mane and tail. WHITE DUN horses have very light body color with black or grey off-color. The legs may be dark up to the knees and the face above the muzzle is usually the same color as the body instead of brown. YELLOW DUN horses have darker yellow off-color, never black. The forelock. mane and tail can be completely white. This color is rare. GREY horses have black or grey off-color along with the grey body color Yes there are Grey body color Fjords around. There are not a lot of them though. There are also some of the White and the Red dun's around. The rown Dun is the most common color. I do not know of any Yellow Duns in this country. I mean, it may be possible that Jean saw mares, but I have seen Belgian foals, mares, geldings, even entire herds on a local farm AND at the fairs. They all have very short necks, very short, heavy legs, massive shoulders (even at birth, the ratio is noticeable!) and haunches. Hooves the size of dinner plates! As I said, all were an almost identical golden creamy chestnut out here. Never saw a white one. I understand that there are roans in this breed, so maybe that was what she meant. I am surprised that she thought they had style, though. The ones out here are workers, and they plod. They look impressive, but if you see them, and compare them to a Percheron, for example, "style" is not something you would associate with their way of going. ... ...... ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: MiddleWood (604) 327-7949 (1:153/8033.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: EGZ00001 Date: 12/29/97 From: JERRYL EVANEE Time: 11:16am \/To: MIKE MAY (Read 0 times) Subj: Fjord questions -> The colouring, the wording anyway, is another mystery. Mr X was suppose to have been cut when he was born (we didn't own him hen -- I got him when he was a few months old) .... he demanstrates the "bit of a little man" as you put it from time to time with our other 2 mares ..... I know exactly what you are talking about "strutting about and rounding them up" ... it IS funny to watch. These are the times that he's being the "boss" and Shamazon is letting him do it .....
