Buddy still smokes somewhat -- however, he does NOT moke in the house ..... he does NOT smoke in MY truck and most of the time he does NOT smoke around me so he's cut way back. It worries me that he still does smoke though because of his heart ...... that's the reason *I* quit -- ecuase the doctor told Buddy he HAD to quit ..... MY reason for quitting was for HIM .... Also been gone on vacation (a great time to lose one's echomail feed, the night before you are due to leave town) and went to visit my mom. I managed to bring back some of my model horses and some of my horse books, but sadly was unable to locate my lovely *wood* Thoroughbred mare and foal set. I suspect that the box they were in has been thrown out by mistake, but maybe I'll get lucky and find them the next trip back. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: EGL00002 Date: 12/16/97 From: JERRYL EVANEE Time: 08:13am \/To: JEAN PROPHET (Read 0 times) Subj: English SHIRE Horses ... >-> Anyone know anything about ENGLISH SHIRE HORSES?? I've been offered a >-> deal on one -- a 7yr old gelding - black with white blaze We just finished doing an article on the Shire horse. They are slower moving than the Clydesdale (which they somewhat resemble) but are longer lived. I saw a photo of a man and his team of four mares, not one of which was under 25, and some were over 30 years old and still working! The Shire also has much more feathering; the white hairs grow right out the front of the leg from the knee down, whereas a Clydesdale has feathering only on the sides and backs of the legs. Price ranges are usually based on family lines, on condition of the horse in particular, and just basic horse-trading instincts. People will ask what they hope they will get. > Well if I remember right they are the ones they call "The > Gentle Giants". I JP> I thought that's what they called the Percharon horses ... Gentle Giants is applied to any draft horse. The forest horse from which they are descended were calmer in disposition than the speedy desert horses, like the Barb and Arabian. JP> ! Today we had a carriage job at a local eye doctors office (Dr Parish) he had a Christmas Open House and hired us to give rides from afternoon into the evening. I left work at 2:45pm and rushed home -- Buddy was all ready and we ooked the trailer to my truck ... He already had the carriage on the trailer and hooked to the back of his Jeep. I loaded up X and SEDONA and had just enough time to pour the coffee into our thermos before we had to leave to go to our job. We took both horses becuase I do NOT want to tire out either horse nor break them down. It's just as easy to take both of them anyway ..... (like kids -- what's one more ). It was ALMOST desastrous as a strap on the harness broke - we didn't even have any of those little rawhide strips so in desperation we WIRED the damn thing together with a piece of bailing wire (where there's a will there's way (most of the time ). Of course I had failed to bring the other breast piece from the other harness - my fault .... NEXT time I'll have spare stuff AND rawhide strips too !!! We hitched up SEDONA first ..... she did GREAT but since she really asn't used to being driven for too long a time she started wearning out in 2 hours (after all, we took 3-4 people each time we went around the block and it was one trip after another). So, I put X's harness on him, unhitched SEDONA and off Buddy went again with X for another hour and a little bit. (Buddy's the driver -- I handle the horses) BOTH horses were EXCELLENT!! Traffic didn't bother them - horns, trucks -- NOTHING ..... everything really went well!! In fact, some people went home, got their spouses, friends or children and came back for another ride The editor of Callossa Belle Newspaper was there early on ..... She look LOTS of pics .... I'm sure that she'll put a good one in the LaBelle Newspaper !!! Also there was our State Representative, Joe Spratt .... HE wants to ride in our carriage in the Swamp Cabbage Parade (that's in February) Dr Parrish was so impressed that told us he was going to make this an ANNUAL Event ..... soooooo, looks like we already have a job booked for next year . I'm pleased with the way things went ..... this was the longest job we've had ..... and at night too. AND, I picked up a few more jobs (hour rides to look at Christmas lights) before and after Christmas ...... --- * Origin: Home of Mr X's 'XTRAORDINARY CARRIAGE SERVICES!
