Howdy, Bob bk> Interesting.. the Shetlands I've seen here are usually a mixture of bk> spoiled and ill mannered ponies. I think that's more a reflection on the owner. They are a naturally stubborn breed and the colts can be especially bolshie. We've got four pure-bred (including one miniature). The mini is a real gent, we've used him to give children ride at various shows, and he's the perfect people-attractor. Good for getting donations to the charity. (Unusual to get a horse these days who can earn his keep!) Unfortunately he's now got cancer, and although he's not yet in pain, his days are limited. >> bk> do. The problems we had were that the horses spooked.. and when >> bk> they did, they had a tendancy to go straight through the wire. >> Nasty. What sort of horse? TB type? bk> They were a mixture of TB's, Quarters and some various other breeds. Don't often see quarters over here. Lovely looking breed. Must be fun to ride - they're pretty powerful aren't they? >> I think the worst problem with leccy fences is when something breaks. bk> I'm sorry Simon.. but I'm not familiar with the term "leccy". Sorry - English slang. Means "electrical" >> Had one this week - our biggest field, on a huge hill. Walking all >> around it, testing it. We don't have a tractor, but a small one wouldn't hack it either. It would have to be a large tractor - and that would make even more of a mess in the fields... I find it fascinating to watch the heirachy forming and reforming, and it's especially fast to develop with mares. One of our mares was poorly this summer - nothing serious, just off form. Changed our node number, so we weren't getting mail for a while. All's well here...Fiddle continues to recover, albeit slowly from her laminitis bout (farrier wants to do one more set of shoes, then thinks I can ride her again), Shiloh is still the most laidback horse on earth, and I'm down to 2 kids for the winter (which is fine with me!). JEAN....I QUIT SMOKING!!!! A month ago..still on the patches, but doing well, except for the 1/2 ton I've gained. Need your magic formula for losing weight! Richard quit about 5 months ago, so living with him was becoming impossible as a smoker (VBG). For those of you who might remember her, I got a Christmas letter from Karen Malcor yesterday. She's doing well with her breeding program with her Khemo son (Beau), and is now raising sheep and spinning their wool;her husband is weaving it! Never could say that Karen didn't have an interest or two - ew! Well, just thought I'd touch base with y'all. I've missed you! In SE Kent we've had a very dry time of it. So much so that mud is not the problem that it used to be :-))) What is going on with this weather? I think it's the way they are raised and handled -- Remember how unruly Tuffy was when we first got him way back when?? That's when I first started reading and writing in EQUUS. Well, Tuffy is the most gentle, nicest, sweetest pony now you ever want o see ...... his bad behavior that he had when we got him was caused by all the abuse he got before he came to us here at Byte Size Estates - that changed with a lot of love and attention! Of course Tuffy isn't a true Shetland I don't think -- but he's efinately of Shetland stock ..... maybe that makes a difference -- donno' .... --- * Origin: Home of Mr X's 'XTRAORDINARY CARRIAGE SERVICES!
