Max it up! bk> I've seen mixed results with electrified wire.. when horses get bk> spooked and they have no where to go.. they go right through the bk> wire.. electrified or not. Very rarely happens. We've got 3 or 4 miles of the stuff with a /complete/ of horses. All ages from newborn through to one of 45 years, all sizes from miniature Shetland to Shire. The thumper we use is a 12v car battery powered farm type (HotLine is the tradename over here) and that's good for about a mile of rope and a fortnight before recharging. We edge all our fields with the stuff, and divide the fields too. The only problem is with vegetation encroaching and shorting it out (flat battery real quick). There are three main types over here for the wire; simple orange string (normal farm use); white ribbon (especially for horses, but flutters and breaks in strong wind) and a 1/4" rope which is what we use. Cheapness is the main reason - fencing a field can be a tad expensive. But also, we rent fields, so don't want to spend on permanent fixtures. The only problems we've had is when there has been nowhere for the horse to go. One once got behind the electric fence and up against a barbed wire fence and got in a bit of a tizzy after a tree blew the electric down, but that's about the only time. Ciao, Simon ... When Tush popped her's on Fri I brought her out.. put her on Bute and ice packs as after as possible. It took the swelling way down to about 1/3 the original size. It was about three days ago when someone told me about splitex. I've been using it since and the splint continues to go down, even after cooling and getting somewhat hard. So after 6 days, this thing is WAY down.. and looks like maybe it won't leave a blemish! :) I'll keep you posted.. but looks like Splintex is good stuff! :) BK --- DB A3000sl/001347 * Origin: * Conniption BBS * one fit at a time (1:102/861) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: EFW00005 Date: 11/26/97 From: BOB KOHL Time: 04:00am \/To: JEAN PROPHET (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: SEDONA ... > Hummmmm ....... Well several issues with that.. 1) Horses with tendancies towards proud flesh should not have this put on them.. it will promote the process. 2) If the wound is severe.. nothing more then cold water should be run on the wound while the vet is on the way. If it's bleeding excesively.. get pressure on it NOW.. don't worry about anything other then stemming the bleeding. No turniquites.. just direct pressure. >>> Oh yea ...... got that too ..... All horse owners should know the average sound of their horses guts during rest and after excersise.. the same goes for heart beat and resperation and capalary refill time. I normally check gut sounds strickly by putting my ear up to the sides of my horses.. that's typically all I need. If I do need the stethoscope.. then I get VERY concerned quickly.
