Well it goes farther then this one.. a couple of nights ago (I've had a bad case of the flu, so no riding.. not even going around the horses since humans and horses can pass rhino). It was exceptionally cold, dark and very windy.. no one was riding. I said what the heck and brought her out and saddled up. One very mild spook at the beginning and not a peep after. I was shocked at how level headed she stayed.. :) BK --- DB A3000sl/001347 * Origin: * Conniption BBS * one fit at a time (1:102/861) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: EEK00002 Date: 10/16/97 From: BOB KOHL Time: 07:09am \/To: JEAN PROPHET (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: Snap, Snap, SNAP >> This is a real hard one to get them to stop.. and part of >> working on it is how much the horse likes to please you and >> or likes to get along with you. > That'll probably take time -- we ARE bonding but it's only been 2 > months now ..... Yep, depends on how much she wants to please you.. Sounds like she does.. so I think you'll be fine in the long run. You may have some re-occurances of it on occasion, but all you have to do is step back and remind her firmly but gently. >> Takes time Jean.. may never work 100%.. but it's worth the >> effort for a very bad habit. > I know it's a bad habit ...... and I'm just hoping it can be > corrected ..... like I said before -- she's an extremely NICE horse with > only this 1 bad habit ...... and now it IS a habit as I never cinch up > tight ..... she doesn't give me a moments worth of problems after the > cinching up is all done. Yep, not unsual... and remember that there's no perfect horse and one bad habit is actually a big plus! ;) > Thanks for the advice ....... I'll keep you posted. Anytime Jean.. But you can never be sure about it since they know that it damages the brain and/or the upper portions of the spine. So for the horse to be cognisent about what was going on.. depends on the portion of the brain that had suffered damage. The only desease that I know got anywhere near like this where they were sure that the horses knew what was going on, was HYPP.. But as bad as the HYPP "episodes" got.. it was never EVER near as bad as the EPM "episodes" that I've seen. I'm still getting too many horse magazines to keep up with. Usually when Practical Horseman comes in, I turn straight to Kip Goldreyer's _The Thinking Horseman_ column and read about her latest adventures with Wachtel. Then I put the issue in my bag of stuff I take up and read while I'm doing my laundry. Sometimes I get to the rest of the issue, and sometimes not. But I did notice they are running a very useful series on how to introduce a green horse to riding on the trail. Mike Plumb's Horse Journal has been doing some articles on clothing and boots and stuff, which I always find of interest since I still haven't made my big raid on the tack store or catalogs which you guys have heard me planning for the last how many years? ;-) Recently they did ladies' full-seat breeches, with one of women at Mike's barn bravely posing for all the pictures of the different models they tested. I noticed when they did a paddock boot comparison, there was no mention of the durability problems of the women's Ariat boots that we had talked about before. It could be that they don't beat on them long enough for any differences to show up -- it isn't always clear how long they have tested something (a weakness in their otherwise solid review articles). EPM has gotten some good coverage in EQUUS, but it was long enough ago since I read it that I've forgotten what they said -- I recall seeing a good bit of info on the life cycle of the parasite that is suspected, some discussion of the research which is being done now for new treatments, and a general overview for those readers who don't have the hands-on experience that we've acquired here from Jean and Bob's postings. :-( HORSEPLAY seems to have settled in nicely with its new publisher and is on a regular schedule again. It has the nicest offerings for the juniors with the special "Horseplay Jr" sections. Thanks to Mike, Jean, Bob, Meg, and the other long-time folks for sending news! And hello to the new echo participants! Just remember, if nobody else is talking about the style of riding you do, that's all the more reason you should write something about it -- if we don't know much, we'll be even more eager to hear about it. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: EEL00001 Date: 10/15/97 From: JEAN PROPHET Time: 06:02pm \/To: MIKE MAY (Read 0 times) Subj: ???? >-> HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ....... sorry for laughing but it sounded so funny >-> (like a cartoon) ,,,, ;-) > Well I didn't think it was too funny at the time.
