Hi, I'm new at this, so patience! I just happened to see Equus and began looking at everyone's messages. I've been heavily involved with Arabs since 1984, but currently have only 1, my 10-yr. old stallion, oh, and KC a good ol' quarterhorse gelding who just happens to be my stallion's stable/pasture buddy. My experience was mainly showing, breeding, raising, training and some pleasure riding, but it became extremely expensive, which is how I wound up with the stallion and his buddy. It was an incredible journey, and possibly if $$$'s were still available, I'd probably still be active. Currently, my stallion (Talko) and I (Dee) pleasure ride. I'm getting ready to move to an area where I can bring the horses with me. At this moment, I board, and, it is reasonable, but no one provides your horse with the love and care you do. I am looking forward to having the opportunity of having them right behind me to enjoy. My only regret is not being able to become involved at an early age vs. mid-life. But I also am fortunate to have been able to have this involvement. It was a pleasant surprise to be able to have found people with similar interests. I would be interested in sharing knowledge/stories with anyone. delores warder@f132.n109.z.1.fidonet.org Dee Warder --- SLMAIL v4.0a (#0304) * Origin: Free Spirit =*= SL/RIP =*= 301-283-0917 =*= V32b/HST (1:109/132) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: EDE00001 Date: 09/08/97 From: JOHN ROOKER Time: 12:17pm \/To: MIKE MAY (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: Horsekeeping costs In a message to John Rooker <09-04-97 05:48> Mike May wrote: MM> Sounds like a good fit to me John. SEDONA has one bad habit ...... everytime you go to cinch her up she "snap, snap, snaps" ..... Sometimes she turns her head towards you and SNAPS ...... sometimes she simply keeps her head forward but still the "snap, snap, snap" of her teeth. NOW, what I have been doing is smacking her on her shoulder when she snaps at me ...... the loud POPPING noise is loud -- just that ...... doesn't really hurt her but gets her attention -- from that point she will keep her head perfectly straight forward but will still "snap, snap" from time to me. I knew she did this when I bought her -- the gal I bought her form told me that SEDONA started doing this when a trainer started cinching her up REALLY TIGHT (Now, *I* don't cinch up tight -- just enough to keep things straight -- but I suppose it's become a bad habit now) Anyone else ever have a horse do this?? How do I break her from doing it. Personally, I don't care ..... and I was told that SEDONA does NOT bite - never has ...... HOWEVER, it DOES worry me that she MIGHT bite with all this "snapping" she's doing .... HELP!! Anyone have a solution?? Yes, she's as nice driving as the X-Man is .... Yesterday we finally received the leather harness I'd ordered for her -- It took us about 45 minutes to "fit" her properly and then we harnessed her up for the first time since I bought her (we had driven her before we bought her) ...... She seemed OK with her new "attire" so off down the street we went ...... Buddy was driving (remember, I'm just learning to drive -- he's been doing it for a while ). Shoot, she was perfect ... I told Buddy that I would drive X until I felt really comfortable driving ..... he was "ragging" on me about SEDONA was my horse so I should be driving HER .... SO, after supper, we went BACK out - harnessed her up AND Mr X too ...... I was driving X (practing my "talents" before I tried SEDONA ) ...... Buddy drove SEDONA ..... (Hey, we were a PARADE ) ........ I was really feeling good about this - X was responding to my every command so we decided to TROT. Well, all was going good so I shouted to Buddy "lets trade" - *I* wanted to drive MY horse ...... everything STILL was good ..... I asked SEDONA for a trot (TROT-ON) ..... she did -- then I got a bit braver and ask her for an EXTENDED TROT -- she did. In the meantime Buddy had ask X to trot ..... he did -- then asked X for an EXTENDED TROT -- he did. Well, I want to tell you that I've never seen X prettier ..... his knees came UP and legs stretched out (looked like a pacer!!) ... then as they passed me and SEDONA, X turned and gave me the oddest look ...... like "LOOK AT ME - I'M TRULY BEAUTIFUL" ...... it was the funninest thing .... and when I looked at his feet and legs from behind and under the carriage, it looked like X was floating on air ..... IT WAS SOME!! Anyway, I'm pleased with SEDONA ...... we are really bonding nicely. She's not nearly as "flashy" as X is ...
