If memory serves.. it's the spring and fall growth that can be so dangerous becuase of the changes in the content of the grass as a feed. BK :> Well, we can put this one to rest...the horses had already been on grass pasture (the other one!) when they broke into the new one. I asked the vet about this, and he said he didn't think it had anything to do with it. BTW, all her bloods were negative...even the thyroid. So, this is one of those "mystery" founders, I guess. The only real factor, I think, was her weight...which is rapidly declining (g). She's on 1 handful of 14% pellets per day (enough to put her flex-free in), and grass hay only! Poor baby...she's miserable (g), along with limited turnout, she doesn't know what's hit her! She's much better. Farrier came and increased her angles and cut down her toes some...that along with her lilly pads seem to be keeping her comfortable, even though we're about to eliminate the bute in a day or two...that'll be the real test. Her mood is much better! As the pain has decreased, her natural feistiness has returned (phew!). It's going to be hard to do this limited turnout thing with her, I'll tell ya! Oh...in the midst of all this, Shiloh threw a shoe the other day...I didn't even notice until a day later....guess I'm just concentrating too much of Ms. Fiddle. Gotta remember to check Shiloh out each day like I usually do! The kids'll kill me if anything happens to her...especially after they had to give her a rest for that stone bruise a while back. Understand.. given the shear number of articles even in the more technical magazines (even moreso then EQUUS).. they all say the same think about grass during spring and fall growth. There is a serious founder risk there from over eating. EQUUS actually even broke it down into a chart a few years ago. > BTW, all her bloods were negative...even the thyroid. So, this is > one of those "mystery" founders, I guess. Shouldn't be though.. since when are Arabs prone to founder? It's late.. but this just doesn't click for me. > The only real factor, I think, > was her weight...which is rapidly declining (g). Good! :) > She's on 1 handful of > 14% pellets per day (enough to put her flex-free in), and grass hay only! Oh Lord.. speaking of lousey hay (chuckle) we're in bad shape here because of the floods.. all the top feed is going up north at premium prices.. so we are having a very hard time getting good feed, including that great oat hay I talk about from time to time.. the substitute is a poor oat hay and the horses are not fond of it. :( > Poor baby...she's miserable (g), along with limited turnout, she doesn't > know what's hit her! She's banged herself up twice lately.. a cut to the chin and a serious dent in the head.. took a decent size patch of hair off the other day. > Oh...in the midst of all this, Shiloh threw a shoe the other day...I > didn't even notice until a day later....guess I'm just concentrating too > much of Ms. Fiddle.
