Just have to > find the right size equivalent. Sometimes that works, Mike, but sometimes it doesn't. It depends on how much the bootmakers have changed the last between the men's and the women's sizes, and how close your feet are to the shape of the last. If a woman has relatively narrow feet, it will be difficult for her to find a man's boot that will be the right width. The arch-length equivalent is 2 sizes different in the US: a woman who wears an 8 will take a man's size 6 shoe. I haven't yet figured out the size equivalent in the width, but they might be the same (i.e. the question is, is a man's D width shoe the same as a woman's D width). I do know that a "medium" woman's shoe is a B width and a "medium" man's shoe is a D width; a woman's "wide" is a D and a man's "wide" is probably a EE; and a man's "narrow" is a B, while a woman's 'narrow' is probably a AA. So if a woman takes a "medium" woman's shoe, she'll need a "narrow" in a man's size. Note that I say in the US; I think that in the UK and Europe the men's and women's shoes are all on the same scale (where the hypothetical man who wears a US size 6 and woman who wears a US size 8 will both wear a UK size 6, something around a 38-39 in Euro sizes. I won't even go into the fact that men's shoes are likely to be too big in the heels for most women, or talk about the fact that high- quality shoes are made on a last which is a combination of sizes (a 'combination last'). The real kicker is, I've known guys who wore a 5 1/2 or 6 men's shoe, and they often bought women's boots because they were easier to find! So we gals may not be able to *find* a man's boot in the right size to fit us -- they may not make them! Or they may only be made for the kid's market in which case they will be cheap because the shoemaker expects them to be outgrown before a good shoe will wear out. Wonder if there's a 12-step program > for horseshow addiction....HELP!!! Let's take these one at a time, shall we? 1) You're too old. Hogwash. (How old would you be if you weren't showing?) 2) Fiddle's never been in a trailer. This is more promising. No, you really don't want to be hauling Fid off to show when she's not properly trailer-wise. Do you really, really want to get into the "you WILL get into this trailer" battle with Fiddle because you MUST get her into the trailer because you've already signed up for the class and if you don't go you'll lose all the money you shelled out for entry fees and make a fool out of yourself in front of (or not in front of) all the people who know you had planned to show that weekend? Or worse -- do you want to BE at the show and not be able to get Fiddle *home* because she won't get into the trailer? So train her to ride in the trailer first! Take your time and do it right. Not because you want to take her to show -- because she needs to know. 3) Fiddle's not fully trained yet. See above. Do you want to mess up Fid's training because you're under a show deadline? I know what you're going through. I can't smell chalk without wanting to go and teach again. ;-) But I tough it out and after a while, the feeling goes away again. Just focus on what Fiddle needs to know. You can worry about whether you want to show off what she knows *after* she knows it. I always feel that it is wrong to (for example) make a student learn some brutal show-off piece for a recital, then make them stumble through it in performance. Why not let them get their performance experience by playing something that is *easy* for them under classroom circumstances? Like the race-trainer's trick of dropping a horse down a class. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: E5P00006 Date: 05/18/97 From: JAN MURPHY Time: 11:04am \/To: DEBBY TAYLOR (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: shoe-mania [warranty replacement] > > One did and they replaced them. Michael Plumb's Horse Journal just did a big run-down of paddock shoes a couple of issues ago. I forget which ones they liked. If I pay over a hundred > dollars for > boots I expect them to last for a couple of years and to > look good for > more than a month. Well, I don't know. I would have agreed with you 20 years ago, but these days, a hundred dollars only gets you a pair of cheap boots. I paid ninety bucks each for a couple of pairs of ankle-boots (we're talking fashion boots here, not 'real' boots) and I baby them; the leather is a thin split and if you yanked them on and off, they'd tear up. (I bought these in the early 80's.) So I'd expect decent riding boots to be well over 100 just for cheap ones. I agree with you, though -- for the same price point, there's no excuse for the women's and men's being such different quality. The only thing to do is to hound the company and make them fix it, or at least to write a letter saying "I'm switching back to Justins because your boots didn't hold up to ordinary use" or something like that. If the company gets no negative feedback at all, they will never clean up their act. We get Ariat sales reps through town doing trunk shows from time to time. I can put a word in the ear of the local sales rep, but it would be useful to know what model you have and when you bought them. Totally agree with the idea of gel-sole inserts, though inserts don't always work (if you've bought the shoes to fit without them, the shoes are then too small with the inserts in.) --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: E5P00007 Date: 05/16/97 From: JEAN PROPHET Time: 06:23am \/To: BOB KOHL (Read 0 times) Subj: ??? >> Link must be broken again ......
