The leather harness we use for "good" came with the first carriage we bought. The individuals had no idea what they had (first one came from a widow who was selling her husbands stuff - second one from another individual who had advertised it in the Ft Myers newspaper classified ads). Our blacksmith just gave us a mail order catalog for parts for our carriage .... maybe they would know. Anyway, thanks for all your help ...... Other than > that the Library ( > I can't believe you didn't suggest this one ;-) ) should > have some books and > magazines on it. As you know, I am a strong believer in libraries and think people should support them and know how to use them. On the other hand, there are some questions where you may be better off finding the answer somewhere else. The trick is knowing which questions are which. In Jean's case, there are two ways to go. *If* she wants a traditional look, then a book on driving which contains notes on proper attire might be fine, as long as the book wasn't too old. Otherwise she would end up with outdated clothing and look old-fashioned. Now if she *wants* a period look, then she's in good shape. ;-) On the other hand, if she wants to show a bit of flash, she might want to look for current magazines to see what is considered fashionable right now, or get hints on what is coming into fashion. Now is a good time to look for this kind of article, since everybody is gearing up for show season, and the magazines usually come out with a 'what's hot this spring' sort of fashion article. And I mean *everybody* -- heck, even _Mike Plumb's Horse Journal_ has an article in the current issue about how to choose a jacket for showing in. The trouble is, in these hard times, a lot of libraries don't have the resources to keep subscriptions to magazines. Not all magazines are 'keepers' and libraries may want to spend their money buying items which are more permanent. Although even this is relative -- a local librarian told me recently that most modern fiction hardcovers lasted about three circulations before they had to be discarded or sent off to be re-bound. I was a little surprised, but knowing how cheaply most books are made nowadays, and knowing how abusive many library patrons are of library books, it wasn't too far off what I would have guessed if I had been forced to do so. (It's a good thing this wasn't true when I was growing up, because I put more than three circs on many of the books in my local public library, all by myself.) --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: E4N00000 Date: 04/16/97 From: DEBBY TAYLOR Time: 09:16pm \/To: JEAN PROPHET (Read 0 times) Subj: Mr X's FIRST Job!! -> That it was for sure!!! JP :> Anyway, thanks for all your help ...... I'll certainly JP :>appreciate any video you might send along .... I know Jan wants you to support your local library (VBG), but I'll bet a search on the net, or a post to rec.eques. (shuddddddder!) might find you some answers. If you're acting as groom for your carriage rides, then I think any appropriate costume (maybe matched somehow to Buddie's) might do. If you mean "groom" as in keep the horse/harness/carriage clean, and doing the general dirty work, then as long as you look relatively professional, I don't think it matters what you wear. If you mean "groom" as in, I'll ride by his side and take care of stuff other than driving, then you should probably get an outfit to match his....does any of this make any sense (g)? If you plan on showing in harness, then you will have to find out what's in style and what it is you need to wear. It's too early, I have a headache, and all this sounds much too complicated for me (g)!
