Then, I always respond directly to the person...don't often post on that rubbish heap of a newsgroup! I've never in all my life seen such cr*p from people who don't usually know much about anything. If a lousy 'tude was required to be a good horseperson, some of those people would be Olympians! Oh yeah, and a giant ego too! It's downright scary! When taking a horse off of Alfalfa and putting them on -> Oat Hay, I guess I don't understand...are they growing the "hay" in -> different locations? Is it becasue the Alfalfa has a higher protein, -> or is that not the problem? I hve also been told that in San Diego The alfalfa is just a different hay and doesn't have the same minerals that oat hay does. He never pawed unless I tied him up on the lead rope and -> wanted to brush him or bathe him etc... Then that's when he started -> with the pawing. Or, when I turned by back to get another brush or -> hoof pick, then he would do it. Even after he was gelded he -> continued to paw. I had read in the Appaloosa Journal's latest issue -> that they had said the same thing that you mentioned about boredom, -> or wants to go out and play or work. These horses would have been -> great at war time to dig foxholes....he, he Smokey drove me crazy pawing, when I first got him, when he was tied. I broke him of it use a bucketful of wet sponges a good horse book and a chair in the shade(It was summer). I put him the cross ties sat down with the good horse book and yelled quit everytime he pawed and then followed it with a wet sponge when he ignored me. The sponge went splat his eyes got real big and then we would do the whole thing over again. It took about 2 hours before he decided not to paw for more than 10 minutes. I washed out the sponges and then we went for a ride. I've had one refresher course since then that lasted about 20 min and 10 of that was spent waiting for him to paw. This won't work in his stall though because he doesn't do it if I'm there. I have a 2 year old half quarter horse filly and a 7 -> year old morgan gelding. Just came back to the horse world after a -> 16 year absence. I have started to drive the gelding last fall and -> have taken the winter off (way too much ice for my liking). I will -> also be getting back a horse I owned when Hi bonnie. Welcome to the echo. When you come back you really do it. Two horses and you're getting another one in April. Did you see Americas horse. The horse that took the senior pole bending was a 22 year old QH mare. I thought that was really neat. I can understand taking the winter off where you are. -> I guess that's the key. Where is everyone located? I am close to -> Ottawa, Canada, where the temperature is again dropping tonight and -> we are expecting freezing rain. Hope the horses stay in their -> shelter tonight! I'm in Central California. Winter appears to be over here. The temperature was warm enough today after the fog cleared that I was out in my short sleeves. The weeds in my flower gardens are flourishing and my hibiscus and roses are blooming. My horses and dogs are shedding by the handfuls. My husband and I have 2 QHs. A 9 year old mare and a 15 year old gelding. We both ride English and will get back to taking dressage lessons as soon as our trainer is sound. She just had her knee replaced.
