--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: E1T00009 Date: 01/23/97 From: VICKI NICHOLS Time: 05:38pm \/To: MIKE MAY (Read 1 times) Subj: Merry Christmas!??? Sorry, I have never replied to a message using whatever modem program is on this computer, so I have no clue right now how to quote. When I use the commands I am accustomed to, it asked me which number I want to redial! For the rest of you, what Mike means about the Indians attacking - The Mays indicated some interest in visiting some of the surrounding scenery (mountains) so I took them to South Mountain Park, a preserve of 16,500 acres - reputed to be the largest municipal park in the United States. I have been there on many occasions, particularly to work on the air conditioners on the communications equipment at the top of the mountains. I knew that there was a SPECTACULAR view up there, so we headed towards the towers. I missed telling Mike when to turn and we went to a "lookout" that I had never been to before. After all, I am usually at a much lower elevation riding my horse, of at the towers with my face in a schematic or an air handler. We got up to the vista, and I was stunned to see probably half a dozen "native Americans" with sheets spread out behind their pickup trucks selling jewelry! I thought Rene was joking when she said it was good because she needed to do some more shopping anyway... It was really very funny to see these vendors and the bartering and trading and running back and forth between each other to see to it that they were able to put together what Rene and Margie wanted. The part that I found the MOST amusing was the large sign that stated it was illegal to BUY or SELL anything in the park without a permit! I was certain that our county sheriff, Sheriff Joe Arpaio (a.k.a. THE TOUGHEST SHERIFF IN AMERICA) was going to show up and handcuff us all and take us down to his Tent City with the rest of the prisoners and wear pink underwear and eat bologna sandwiches! I really thought that Mike would comment on dinner, though. We first went to the steakhouse I had gone to with the Alfoni's, and there were at least three dozen people waiting outside! So we went to my second choice, Bill Johnson's Big Apple Steakhouse, and I learned that the waitresses in New York don't wear real revolvers like the ones here at Bill Johnson's do. I don't believe that a LOT of people stiff the waitresses there, though! Anyway, I had the BEST time with you guys, Mike, and am looking forward to the next time I see you all! This echo has the NEATEST people in it, and the Alfoni's and Mays are living proof of that. BTW, Meg - Mike drove Spot for two miles, with Rene and Margie in the cart. But they seemed to be most taken with CASEY! He IS a CUTE little guy, and his Mohawk is grown out and his mane now almost covers his neck. His tail drags the ground, and I've always thought that the four white stockings made up for the fact that he doesn't have the cutest face in the world... ;) Anyway, maybe I will be back on this weekend. I'll look around for another BBS as Dean is threatening to take this one down. No, I haven't really talked to him since last week. I don't think I am ready to. Maybe after I have my OWN house and have to go over and pick up my stuff. (I BOUGHT some clothes, etc.) Hope you had a great trip back. --- Maximus/2 3.00 * Origin: ElseWhere (1:114/212) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: E1T00010 Date: 01/22/97 From: JEAN PROPHET Time: 06:43am \/To: BOB KOHL (Read 1 times) Subj: Possible Problem?? >>> I'd quit branning him more than usual and stop the >>> psyllium unless you ;think you need it....I don't >>> think this has anything to do with a colicy type of >>> situation. The El Tovar!!! WOW!!! -> We would have killed to stay there, but they were booked about a year in -> advance when I called. We did have lunch there, though. What a place!! -> Kind of reminded me of Teddy Roosevelt and that whole rough crew. But ith -> mucho class! We stayed in one of the much more rustic places...and I use -> rustic in the loosest of terms (g). Well I think the only reason we got in was because of the weather. We had reservations at the Maswik lodge (the one that is a half mile away from the rim) but we decided to just check out the El Tovar and see if they had anything open. They had 1 room left and it was totally awsome and it only cost nother $20 from the Maswik! I would stay there again in a second. We had dinner there too, it was great. The service was so good it was unbelievable. -> Well, then, Mr. Kohl, you have no excuses now! Glad you got to see these -> horses in the flesh, Mike. Shoot, I wish I could see Tush!! Yeah you should see her. She is so friendly. I thought she was going to go home with me. -> Well, our door is always open! I can show Vicki all around the witch city -> of Salem (one of my ancestors was hung during the witch trials) and oston -> and all the great beaches and great places to go for seafood, etc. Oh, -> yeah...she could get to see my horses too!! So, Vic, when you coming? Yeah and if she wants to stop around here we can go for a drive too with Malla. That goes for anyone else that wants to take a northeast trip too. -> Glad you had a good trip, Mike! I was worried about the weather, but sounds -> like you did just fine! Was the Grand Canyon amazing or what?! Simple amazing. There arn't any words I can think of to describe it. Did ou happen to take in the I-Max theater show of the Grand Canyon? You probably don't once they've started. The way to avoid (but you can never TOTALLY prevent) stall vices is turnout and more turnout and more work. Pawing, weaving, wood chewing, etc. are all the end result of boredom. Fiddle, for example, stall kicks...even with her stall door open and constant access to turnout, she'll go in her stall and kick the walls...especially at feeding time (g). She developed the habit when she was young and I had her confined to her stall at night. Wish I'd known then what I know now! I'd have just let her range free all the time. However, since most of us don't live in a situation where all day/night turnout is possible, there are a number of things you can do to help your horse keep from getting bored while confined. Stall toys like the Big Red Apple, or my favorite, a big, plastic detergent bottle with a few pebbles in the bottom, making sure they get enough hay to keep them happy, lots of grooming and working time, etc. Even then, there's no guarantee they won't develop a bad habit of some kind. Some horses do, some don't. Fiddle has a bunch (g), and Shiloh has none.....go figure! Fiddle's and Arab and Shiloh's an Appyl....might be a clue in there somewhere (VBG). I have a 2 year old half quarter horse filly and a 7 year old morgan gelding. Just came back to the horse world after a 16 year absence. I have started to drive the gelding last fall and have taken the winter off (way too much ice for my liking). I will also be getting back a horse I owned when I was 16, for my daughter to ride. She will be coming in April and is the mother of the 2 year old. I have considered breeding her but am on/off again about it. She is now 21 and a grade, wonderful temperment. But only a grade, I guess that's the key. Where is everyone located? I am close to Ottawa, Canada, where the temperature is again dropping tonight and we are expecting freezing rain. Hope the horses stay in their shelter tonight!
