Other than the 'runnies' he seems to be fine. I see three possible causes for X's problem here; no doubt the others will chime in with their own experience since I have zilch. 1) Nerves, etc. It does seem possible that the stress of work (riding, driving) could cause the problem. On the other hand, you say he shows no other signs of nervousness or resistence, so let's move on .... 2) Corn oil. Wonder if the extra 'grease' is just too much for him. Wonder if the combination of too much corn oil and the bran could be 'cleaning him out', if you know what I mean. Is there a reason you need to give him corn oil? Is his diet short of other roughage? 3) Exercise. Maybe I'm wrong, but if my memory is correct, exercise stimulates the gut and helps keep everything moving, right? So maybe there's something amiss in the combination of feeding and exercise times. When do you feed him and when do you work him? Anyhow, I wonder if part of the problem might be the combination of too much corn oil, work too close to feeding time, and the exercise all together. I know *my* gut is unhappy when I eat too much greasy food at lunch and then run around at my job immediately afterwords. :-( --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: E1F00022 Date: 01/08/97 From: JAN MURPHY Time: 09:30pm \/To: VICKI NICHOLS (Read 1 times) Subj: phones > We only have TWO area codes in the whole state, so > far - how many do you all have out there, anyway??? Can't speak for Bob's area, but up here we started with just 415 in the SF Bay Area and 707 to the north. Then the East Bay split off with 510 a couple of years ago. Now we hear that the East Bay is splitting up again in a couple of years, and the split will provide enough numbers for a couple of years, then we'll have to do it all over again, I guess. Just too many computers and FAX machines and extra phones and computers and stuff! No wonder Pacific Bell wants to sell all of us ISDN lines. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: E1F00023 Date: 01/09/97 From: JEAN PROPHET Time: 07:11pm \/To: MEG ALFONI (Read 1 times) Subj: Possible Problem?? > JP :> When I'm riding he will stop - expand his > JP :>sometimes it's gas - sometimes it's semi-firm - > JP :>sometimes it's really runny ..... like I said > JP :>only seems to happen when I'm riding or driving > regularily. > If your vet has ruled out any other cause, and this is > ONLY happening when you ride or drive him, then it > most likely is nerves, Jean. However, if the gas gets really bad and he I suppose I'm really panicky about colic now since what happened to "Baby"....I've stopped the psyllium ..... and, I'm only branning him when I bran everyone else (and that's once a week). > seems to be in pain, then you're dealing with another He doesn't seem to be in pain - at least he doesn't act as though he is. > thing totally. Manure in his stall looks good (sometimes smells to high heaven though)....this runny stuff only seems to happen after we get going -- either driving (and only Buddy drives him) and riding (and, only *I* ride him). It seems to be getting better now though ..... last few sessions his poop seemed more like normal ..... maybe he was just nervous for a little while ...... *I* have relaxed so maybe HE relaxed ..... whatcha' think?? Of course that doesn't count when you figure he was doing it when Buddy was driving him (but, it didn't happen last night at all when we took him for a drive). > So, first make sure there's not pain going on here > with tack, bit, feet, legs, back, etc. Then if you've > ruled out everything, I hate to tell you this, but it > might be your nerves that are transmitting themselves > to him. I'm sure you are right, Meg ...... no problem -- hey, I KNOW I've had a problem with being nervous with hiim -- and, he's so good .... you'd think I'd have gotten over it by now. However, like I said above -- I'm starting to relax and so is he. I have no idea why he was still doing it when Buddy drove him......but maybe it's because I'm the one who tacked him up....things are better now though. > Let me know ASAP how you make out.
