Well I've said this before and I'll say it again.. It's always wise to have medicine stocks on hand in case of emergency.. however you should ALWAYS consult the vet beforehand. The point of having stocks on hand is of course in case of emergency.. and after talking to the vet you administer something to help ease the crisis until he/she gets that to treat.. Of course in case of DIRE emergency.. well this is something you should also talk to your vet about ahead of time.. however I've seen two that went into severe colics and were treated first they were so drastic. One suruvived one didn't (a twisted gut). The main concern about the legs should always focus on joint closure in a young horse.. if there's ever a question then radiograph. > They're really stout, but he is still a cob. Yep.. never can tell especially since no one really screwed him up.. :) > Casey was less mature at 7 than my first horse, a POA off the range, > was at 2. I am guessing that you grow up faster when you live out on the > range than you do when you are almost a backyard pet, like Casey is/has > been all his life. Well by "growing up" there's a whole lot of things that this can cover.. They've found that horses grow differently depending on how they're raised in the formative years.. youngins that are out on the range or in LARGE pastures grow bigger and tougher since for one thing the bone development is responsive to the amount of work they're subjected to.. (at least that's the theory last I read up on it) Howver the downside to this is that they're also tougher to work with when breaking them. > Do you think I could have "made" him mature faster if > I had worked with him more instead of concentrating on Dub and Spot? I don't know Vic.. I don't know the horses. > BTW, I understand how nice it must be to work with Tush - no bad > habits picked up from previous owners. I'll go back and bit her up, but in the stall.. Right now I drive only with a halter.. no bit, no bosal, nada! :) BK --- DB A3000sl/001347 * Origin: * Conniption BBS * one fit at a time (1:102/861) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: E1400023 Date: 01/02/97 From: BOB KOHL Time: 03:04pm \/To: VICKI NICHOLS (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: H2O > BK> Yep, I know the way they're growing alfafa back there.. > BK> John and I used to talk about it.. although I'd keep it > BK> in mind that sooner or later the cost of water is going > BK> to get very expensive with the continuing growth of the > BK> West Coast.. water is going to get tricky in the arid > BK> states next century. > Do you think that'll be a consideration when California drops off > into the ocean? My roundhead hen, Buzzi, has 5 little micro-chicks she's trying to keep warm these days. I'll be so happy when they get feathers and can get into the chicken house with the rest of the crew!
