Weaving, like riding, is one of those things that I always mean to get around to, but never seem to find the time or money to do. Yes, Straw into Gold is fabulous. Walk through the double doors and you'll see a wide aisle with sale yarns, the bulletin board with class schedule and neat info, and so on, with the main counter at the back, facing the doors. As you walk in, the half of the store to your left has knitting (ball) yarns, needles and other supplies, and patterns; the book and magazine section; and the kids' play area; the half of the store to your right has all the cone yarns and weaving stuff. They also do mail order -- let me know if you need contact information. >We had a fjord at summer camp this year. It was soooo cute. It was a >fairly young one and from what I saw so mellow. If I had the money to get a horse, I'd have to think seriously about getting a Fjord. >JM>So if you've ever had a hankering to weave your own saddle blankets, >take heart, you aren't alone. > >No thanks. There is alot of iron in those rocks and they spark easy. The only shoes I've seen (in the ads) have a metal part which nails on to the horse's hoof as usual, and then the non-metal shoe part snaps on to the metal base. I can't figure out how they work -- wouldn't you have to pull the metal base just as often as any metal shoe because of the way the horse's hoof grows out? Seems like you'd have to be able to re-set the base or it wouldn't be worth it. And I'm not sure if the snap-on part covers up the whole base; if not, wouldn't the metal studs which lock into the 'sneaker' part still cause sparks from rocks? When I go camping in the Mts I have been Hi Lining my horse.(The Forest Rangers recomend it) I cinch a long rope between two trees as high as I can reach. In the middle Is a picket Knot. I snap a 3ft rope with the swivel at the top to the knot. The bottom of the 3ft rope has a non swivel quik release that is connected to the halter. With the swivel at the top,the rope will turn with the horse so the mane will not get tangled on the rope. The horse can move around under the hi line easily. So far this has worked pretty good, but one time I saw Mica lay down and roll while she was hooked up. She didn't get tangled up but I think the possibility is there. Other than that,I tie the horse to a good tree that is clear of branches with a short rope(so he can't get it around his neck) Or I hobble him if he wants to graze. These ways have worked well with no problems for me, but if there is a better way, I would like to Know. Oh, I did have one slight glitch. The first time I used the hobbles, I didn't get them on quite tight enough.I went down to the stream to get water for coffee and when I came back, the hobbles were laying there on the ground with no horse in them! I caught him 3 miles later:( I learned two things: 1....Get those things on tighter:) 2....Walker is no good on the Honor System:) ....Dave.... --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: Outdoor Focus - University Place, WA (206)565-7730 (1:138/123) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: DD500003 Date: 09/04/96 From: DAVE BURKE Time: 12:06am \/To: GERRY CALHOUN (Read 2 times) Subj: Hi! >Walkers in general make great trail horses if you want to travel any istance >and still be able to sit comfortable the next day. The horse I had before Walker was an Appy mare, so I don't have experience with other breeds. She was a good Mountain horse and would go anywhere and do anything I asked of her. I think Walker is a better saddle horse in alot of ways. He is narrower and more comfortable to sit on,He has alot smoother ride, He likes to walk fast and has lots of energy, He is a very good trail horse......It's kind of like in the early 70's I used to trail ride on a 250 Suzuki enduro and it got the job done. Then I sold it and got a 250 Bultaco Pursang Mk.5. That was a Hi Performance bike and riding it was FUUUUN!!!.......Kind of the same difference between Mica and Walker:) ....Dave.... --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: Outdoor Focus - University Place, WA (206)565-7730 (1:138/123) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 243 HORSES Ref: DD500004 Date: 09/04/96 From: MIKE MAY Time: 05:44am \/To: VICKI NICHOLS (Read 2 times) Subj: Fjords -> Hey, Mike, you probably already know this, but-- -> No I didn't know about this one. -> I rented the movie "I.Q." - you know, the comedy where Walter Matthau -> play -> Einstein, and Meg Ryan plays his niece? But I know the 3 new cows would not appreciate it. As for the horses they are great, they avoid the electric fence. But they are great.
