Just my $ 0.02 concerning the V.90 upgrade debate... 3COM/USR has released new V.90-ready firmware for selected Sportsters. I consider that as a pure marketing thing, given that Sportsters represent the mass-market product of USR's modem line, and V.90 is just another selling argument. Apart from making USR sell more modems (well that's why they're in business for, after all), this V.90 firmware is useless because : 1) It is unofficial (not ITU-approved) pre-release code 2) It may not be compatible with other V.90 implementations Well, this is going to be a real-world beta-testing of V.90 so that the final protocol could address all compatibility and reliability issues before the end of the year when it gets ratified. 3) There is no V.90 upgrade for the servers (USR ones). I don't have any Sportster here, but one Courier-VE/X2 and one Courier-I. I did choose the high-quality Courier line over the mass-market Sportster, and PAID a higher price for this "bene- fit". What happens now is that USR puts far less resources in the Courier updates... I think the reason for that is: the ty- pical Sportster user changes modem every year, whereas the Courier user (who pays more for the initial purchase) keeps its modem for a longer time (and that is _not_ profitable for USR). So far my I-modem has had only ONE X2 firmware available and there is much room for improvement in that code. Rather than an immature V.90 code rushed to market just for the hype of it, I'd LOVE to have a working X2 update... well, I'm speaking of a $ 500 I-modem, for such a price I would expect a decent support. Same complain about the analog Courier. Read you soon !
