At a minimum you will need a Courier I-Modem with V.90 connected to an ISDN line. The Sportster is intended more for use in the home, being somewhat less expensive and having less remote configuration capability. The Courier is somewhat more expensive and intended more for use in a business environment. Other than remote configuration (Courier), voice (in some Sportster models) and expense current production modems are almost alike in function. It's my personal opinion that the Courier handles marginal line conditions somewhat better than the Sportster. How long? Only 3Com knows and again, historically, they won't say. What I find most disconcerting about the Press Release is that it seems that SDLs won't be made available any more as complete files, but that you will need to download a "wizard" (I wonder which platform(s) it runs on) that needs to dial in to 3COM to perform the actual upgrade. I only hope that call is a toll-free call... If this is the case, it also means we can't file the SDLs for flashing back to older code or re-flashing in case of accident without having the "wizard" dial 3COM again. --- Msged 4.00 * Origin: Ready & Determined (819) 772-9277 (1:163/506) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 242 USR MODEMS Ref: F3D00013 Date: 03/04/98 From: GENE LOWRY Time: 09:57pm \/To: TOM RUTHERFORD (Read 6 times) Subj: Memory jog In a message of Tom Rutherford (1:2240/320) writes: GL> That's what I had forgotten! I'm not very knowledgeable on a lot of the technical terms involving HS modems, o bear with me on this one. I have a USR 14.4 Sportser connected to an Amiga 1200 computer. I use it with the default settings with an Amiga term program called Termite. I also have a software emulator that allows me to use my Amiga as a PC-XT, thereby allowing me to use my old Telix v3.22 telcomm program. When I ran my Telix config program, it wanted to write the config ettings to the modem's NRAM. The question I have is if I allow the config program do this, will I screw up it's ability to work with my Amiga term program (that didn't require any writes to the NRAM). The modem works with both programs without the NRAM writes, but I have ad troubles trying to upload files with my PC comm program. Is this because I haven't rewriten the NRAM with the program config?
