BTLZ stuffs some data into the packet to tell the other end "this packet isn't compressed", so there is some slight overhead. Personally, I don't think it amounts to much to worry about. But when the stated purpose is to _communicate_ - for two devices, made by different manufacturers, using standard, recommened protocols, the "differences" had best be in how they _implement_ the protocols, with interop testing to ensure the devices will actually work together. Imagine what a nightmare it would be if one brand of modem couldn't talk to another because of differences in protocol implementation, exacerbated by the fact that different portions of the telephone system couldn't operate properly with other telco systems, because everyone "did his own thing"? You're not talking about healthy competition - you're talking technological anarchy. Imagine a world where a 6-32 nut might or might not mate with a 6-32 screw... I think he's referring to Joe Frankiewicz's statement that one can't use a Winmodem with a 386, that it says right on the box the thing requires at least a 486.
