Here is the problem I am having; I hav a USR Sportster 28.8 data/fax/voice modem, it used to work ok untill my system crashed, After reloading everything I am unable to log on anywhere at any speed faster than 14.4. I am using Telix v2.2 also tried in windows Quicklink and Telemate, all these programs are set up correctly at 57600 I have also tried putting a line in my autoexec.bat file "mode com3:57600,n,8,1" but all I get with that is 'bad file name' or 'invalid prameter' Now is there anything anyone can think of that I may have missed or that I an try to correct this problem. Since we last correspomded, my PCMCIA has totally done a Tamagoochie and has gone to 3com Heavens in Utah. The intermittent " No Dialtone " condition went from intermittent to constant. Having a keen eye, I saw that the socket in the card where one plugs the phone wire ( cable ) was loose and as this is used in a Thinkpad and subject to plug-in,plug-out, I am sure that the problem is that the 4 traces that carry the phone data, got severed. At one time, I could make contact and get a tone by slightly holding this cable up. Can you find out for me from your co-workers in SLC,Utah what they intend to do to me ? For me ? I looked into my putor files and saw that the card was purchased on the 97-09-28 and x2 upgraded on 97-09-29. That is the date that I see if I look at the "properties" of the "Register.tx t" files. I do not have the warranty papers here in Florida but they are kept in Montreal where I will be on the 23rd this month, if you need proof of sale date. And then, might I recommend a better fit for that little socket ? Rest assured that when I either get this modem back or a new one ( hope! ), I will crazy-glue it in so it will not wiggle anymore. It might void your warranty but I do not think that it would be of further need as the modem is very good and the traces thus fixed, would not break again. Food for thought! Let me know what you think and if you can do anythong for me at the " Heaven for PCMCIA " in Utah. The faceplate now says it's a V.Everything with x2, which is what the ATI7 screen says, too. :-) Figured I'd better get the faceplate that matched the actual features. -=> Tom Rutherford -- Team OS/2 <=- ... I pulled the following AP article off of the NY Times Business pages. There's not much detail but thi important thing is that a single standard has been agreed to and approved so we can get on with business. Unfortunately, we will have a period where the ISP's will have to support 2 or 3 56K standards until the existing 56K modems are upgraded Carl February 6, 1998 Faster Modem Accord Reached A.P. INDEXES: TOP STORIES | NEWS | SPORTS | OLYMPICS | BUSINESS | TECHNOLOGY | ENTERTAINMENT Filed at 6:00 p.m. EST By The Associated Press GENEVA (AP) -- An international group has agreed on a standard for faster modem that will nearly double the speed at which many people can log onto the Internet. The new modems transmit data across ordinary phone lines between computers at 56,000 bits of information per second, or 56K in computer jargon. Manufacturers already produce modems that operate at that speed, but used two competing standards that prevent their products from working with each other. The international standard was approved in Geneva Thursday by the International Telecommunications Union. It replaces the current fastest standard for modems in common use over phone lines, the telecommunications union announced Friday. They operate at 33,600 bits per second. Manufacturers have said they will quickly adopt the new standard. The union said the agreement is expected to boost modem sales significantly, to 75 million a ear by the year 2000 from 50 million last year. The stock of 3Com Corp., a major modem maker, edged up 18 3/4 cents to $32.87 1/2 on the Nasdaq Stock Market after falling sharply Thursday. Analysts have raised questions about a glut of existing 3Com high-speed modems as the company begins shipping new products that meet the new standard. Stock in Rockwell International Corp., the other major modem company, rose 3.5 percent on Friday, or $2 to $59.75 on the New York Stock Exchange. Rockwell makes computer chips for other makers of modems. ...
