Hello TS. I have here in a Thinkpad, a USR PCMCIA sporter. Works great! x2 flashed but I have not yet found a connection where I could use it. My post today concerns the connector in the card to the wire. Sheesshe! Nobody can be proud of that one. Sure is nice but too flimsey. Much too weak. Somebody should have kept in mind that this card going into a portable, the wire would be repeatedly plugged in and out. That connection does not stand up to heavy use. Mine did not anyway. Have you had any other customer mentioning this or am I the only one ? If I am the only one, seeing as it is still under one year, could I send it to you for replacement ? I did register it with the facility provided on initializing the modem. It was x2 flashed within one or two weeks of purchase so you can go and see in your files if you keep record of these transactions. Now, I get many " no dialtone " and if I hold the connector in by hand, it works. But I only have two hands. :-) I thought about "crazy-gluing" it in but it would defeat the protability of this Thinkpad. The ball is in your park ! For the next three weeks still, I will be at: J.A.Parrot 7480 Bayshore Drive Treasure Island, FL. 33706-3518 (813) 367-5017 I would love to hear from you. - QWKie v3.1 - --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: Odyssey BBS (1:3603/73) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 242 USR MODEMS Ref: F2500026 Date: 02/02/98 From: JEAN PARROT Time: 10:10am \/To: TECHNICAL SUPPORT (Read 9 times) Subj: Sportster 33.6 attn: Mike C. SON OF A GUN, it was FREE before, and now they > want me to PAY?!?!?!? Had you registered for the X2 upgrade before some time in February of last year, it would have been free. Since you did not register in the window of opportunity, you have to pay the upgrade fee USR (now 3Com) decided to charge to those who either did not register in time or purchased V.34 Couriers after the deadline had passed. I'm not sure that you would have had to install the X2 upgrade immediately, but you *did* need to register for it (separately from registering the modem itself) before their deadline. Had you been paying close attention, here and via USR's web site, you would've known it was free FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY, after which it'd cost an additional $60. I grabbed the free upgrades for three Couriers while the grabbing was good even though there was no real prospect of my needing them at the time, then had them ready to go when I went with AOL and it went with x2. BC> What's up? Is 3Com trying to drive the USR customers nuts?? No. It made a limited-time introductory special offer, which then expired, and you didn't take advantage of it while you could, just as Win 95 was $49 for a limited time then went to (and now has) a $99 shelf price. --- Blue Wave v2.12 * Origin: COMM Port OS/2 juge.com 204.89.247.1 (281) 980-9671 (1:106/2000) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 242 USR MODEMS Ref: F2500030 Date: 02/05/98 From: BRUCE WILSON Time: 06:38am \/To: GENE LOWRY (Read 9 times) Subj: Re: Crc Errors GL> Hang on to your current Telix for when you upgrade and give the DOS GL> version a try running straight DOS. One thing Joe Frankiewicz told me to do with the old system was to set Telix (DOS) for the smallest possible download buffer and to drop RTS during disk writes to prevent incoming data overruns, even with a 16550AFN on the serial port. As for slow systems, I used the V.E. Courier with my old AT&T 6300 after replacing the 8250 on the motherboard with a 16550AFN; and I think I was able to lock the port at 57600. --- Blue Wave v2.12 * Origin: COMM Port OS/2 juge.com 204.89.247.1 (281) 980-9671 (1:106/2000) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 242 USR MODEMS Ref: F2500031 Date: 02/05/98 From: BRUCE WILSON Time: 06:44am \/To: FRANCOIS ROY (Read 9 times) Subj: Re: X2 upgrade is a PAY? Pretty much the same story here. I didn't know when or if I'd be able to use it, but it was free at the time; and I figured it was better to get it for free then than to pay for it later, should it become something I'd want and wish I had in the future. --- Blue Wave v2.12 * Origin: COMM Port OS/2 juge.com 204.89.247.1 (281) 980-9671 (1:106/2000) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 242 USR MODEMS Ref: F2500032 Date: 02/05/98 From: BRUCE WILSON Time: 06:49am \/To: DAVE BEACH (Read 9 times) Subj: Re: problems DB> I guess I'm just a bit frustrated that I took the trouble to post DB> (what I thought were) fairly detailed configuration and problem DB> reports, only to get the most basic and completely useless response DB> from "technical support". * * * DB> Fidonet users (especially sysops) can tend to be a touch more DB> knowledgable than the average person. Personally, I won't touch a Winmodem in any form with the proverbial 10-foot pole, if for no other reason than being dependent on Windows to be able to use the thing. That said, what's the situation with respect to your download buffer and flow control during disk writes? With respect to using a "V.E." Courier with older, slower systems, Joe Frankiewicz advised me to set Telix for DOS to use the smallest possible download buffer and to drop RTS during disk writes, so writes would be frequent but of short duration and incoming data flow would be stopped while they took place (flow control being hardware CTS/RTS only). Can these be adjusted with the Winmodem and TFW? --- Blue Wave v2.12 * Origin: COMM Port OS/2 juge.com 204.89.247.1 (281) 980-9671 (1:106/2000)
