Those calculations are based on "funny stuff" and I don't remember what the "rules" they used when calculating them. It's a bit of a mug's game if I recall - "100%" was based on the expected throughput of an already-compressed file with error correction enabled - and there are enough variables in _that_ statement to make the whole thing questionable. What's the throughput in cps that you're getting? And have you checked the video drivers yet? It turns out the problem was probably due to running a Compaq monitor ("The only monitor optimized for Compaq" with the volume control) on the NEC. His HP is doing exactly the same thing the NEC was, which is some kind of power-management malfunction. The display shuts down at unpredictable times. I'll look into it this weekend. Have you tried calling from a comm program in terminal mode, where you can see the full result codes returned by the modem, and using the ATI6 and ATI11 diagnostics after a connection fails? I've had an ongoing problem with a Rockwell-based Hayes -- the Hayes, for some unknown reason of its own, sometimes will just NOT establish an error-correcting connection; and the result is very much as you'd described. My solution's been to set my Courier to accept ONLY an error-correcting connection (among other things) when calling it and limit the speed to 24000, the highest I've found to be reliable for unattended operation with the thing: &N12 &M5 S13=64 S15=16 I'd not recommend this for long-distance use because it can result in a lot of connections which fail. --- Blue Wave v2.12 * Origin: COMM Port OS/2 juge.com 204.89.247.1 (281) 980-9671 (1:106/2000) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 242 USR MODEMS Ref: F1Y00010 Date: 01/28/98 From: BRUCE WILSON Time: 07:35am \/To: GENE LOWRY (Read 8 times) Subj: Re: Is 14400 considered high GL> Dating yourself John? A real moss-back can remember when 1200 was GL> screaming... Yep. My first modem (1987) was a 300 baud acoustic, followed by a used 1200 baud internal, new 2400 baud internal, and a 14.4 internal, then going to the external Courier V.E. via the field trial (all of them operating in and from my "AT&T 6300", which got a 16550AFN on its motherboard to handle the external Courier V.E.). I sometimes calculate what transfer times would've been at 30 CPS -- the maximum theoretical throughput of the 300 baud acoustic -- to see how many DAYS the multi-meg files we routinely transfer now would've taken in the old days and remember the one day I mowed the yard and did other outside work during the 3-4 hours it took to upload a 360K file that'd now move in a matter of about a minute, checking on the progress of the file transfer from time to time -- or how I learned to "cheat" with PC Pursuit -- calling in at 300 baud then getting a 1200 baud outdial, with the network buffering the difference. --- Blue Wave v2.12 * Origin: COMM Port OS/2 juge.com 204.89.247.1 (281) 980-9671 (1:106/2000)
