I probably don't qualify for "in the know" status but AFAIK, the serial number is unique and imbedded in the daughter board (or on the mother board of single board modems) of the modem. My serial number changed when I changed daughter boards. I can see no benefit to either keeping the serial number private nor to exchanging it with anyone other than USR for either technical support clarification or warranty issues. It was used to validate the free x2 upgrade here in the US last year but that's it to my knowledge.
