I downloaded Netscape 2 for linux, and have been trying to figure -> out how to set set it up so I can dial an isp. I read mans about pppd -> and chat, make a chat script and tried to run the whole thing, but it -> never picked up the phone. I think the trouble might be with the -> script. Minicom works fine, but of course that's not internet. Could -> someone tell me how to set up inet access from square one, and give me -> a useable sample script? -> If I wanted to dial up when I ran navigator, should I make a script -> that: runs pppd, netscape, then pppd disconnect? Before I can answer your question, I need to know what flavor of Linux that you are using. (Some versions of Linux such as RedHat have non-standard way to do it.) I'm also curious on why you want Netscape 2 over one of the later versions? --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Shakey Jake's *All Free BBS!* Santee, Ca (1:202/1324) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 241 LINUX Ref: FA300013 Date: 05/24/98 From: MIKE ROARK Time: 06:35pm \/To: BRYAN SCHWARTZ (Read 4 times) Subj: Linux Internet Hello Bryan! Look around (Hobbes) for EXT2_240.zip. It is a file system driver that will allow you to read and write to a linux partition. Re-Boot after install, and you can see and write to the linux partition. I was having difficulty setting up ppp on a SuSE Linux 5.2 distribution until I installed KDE along with it and used kppp. The only tricky part was telling kppp to use PAP authentication instead of a script. It's a GUI application so setting it up was a simple matter of pointing and clicking, and the online help is excellent. --- Qtach2 v1.07 U4 * Origin: OneNet_St_Louis_MO_(314)664-1285 (1:100/355) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 241 LINUX Ref: FA300016 Date: 05/26/98 From: STEVE MARTONAK Time: 06:03am \/To: FRANCOIS THUNUS (Read 5 times) Subj: Aliases and grep FT> SM> In DOS, using the 'grep' included with Turbo C, I can search my whole FT> SM> harddrive in about a minute. Question: How dow I use 'df' or 'du' to get precise numbers? For the above file count I redirected a 'du -a' into a file and then counted the lines. Must be a better way. On the other hand, what if I copied tomsrt~1.tar to my new 1.72 floppy (it should fit now) and mounted the drive in DLX and tried to deTAR it with Linux??? Close :-) tar was originally intended to work directly with tape drives (which usually shows in the default value for the 'f'(ile) parameter), by manipulating the /dev/whatever file directly. In this sense, the tape is - seen from tar's point of view - a single file[1], in the same way that it is when you use it for a normal file. It is exactly the same mechanism that says that e.g. /dev/hda is the raw data of the first harddisk. You can also make a tar archive directly to /dev/fda (or even /dev/hda) if you feel so inclined. I have used this method several times to transfer data between Linux and our Solaris machines at the university. FT> ZIP. You will notice that the ZIP archive is always bigger than the tgz. FT> That's because zip stores the same information again and again (like the FT> path, for each file), and that info is not compressed. not quite so with FT> tar/gzip. You are very right. This is especially underlined by the fact that GZIP uses the same algorithm as ZIP to compress the data (hence the name). Newer archivers like RAR also has a "solid" mode which uses the same approach to get the last additional 10-20%. [1] Another command - mt - is used to wind and rewind the tape between the various chunks of data. You can put several tar archives after one another on the tape if you want to.
