FWIW I looked at the source code for this particular 'lpr'. This error message is printed at the onset by failure of a call to 'gethostbyname'. I've haven't yet found the source code for 'gethostbyname' to determine precisely what it's trying to read. I also found the 'lpr' source for an earlier (1995) slackware distribution. The call to 'gethostbyname' and the resulting error message weren't in the code. Just out of curiosity, what error message, if any, do you get when you comment out "localhost" in your /etc/hosts.equiv file? As I recall, the Linux version was rather obscurely located on their ftp site, I don't recall exactly where. If necessary, I can find my tar file and give you a date and size. It seems that you have made it. It looked to be touch and go there for a while. Now you've got a world of things to try. When you're ready to do another install, I suggest getting several distributions from CheapBytes and trying them all. I especially recommend looking at all the packages that come with Debian. Just remember, Linux is a community effort; even you and I contribute by testing and constructive criticism. You really got folks here sensitised to the problems of a newbie! Don't forget to look into dosemu, like many things Linux, it is very good and getting better.
