The difference adds up to more than 184 sectors, so I don't know where that one comes from. DOS and most other file systems rely on start/end specified by total number of sectors. The actual cylinder/head/sector values should be set as well, but it is not uncommon for them to be in error. I believe the FIPS documentation mentions a similar problem, although the program itself only supports splitting a DOS partition. BS>ignore it? Perhaps Linux fdisk is just joking Y/N ? I wouldn't bank on it! Got any OS/2 diskdoctoring programs? Don't trust what I say too much, as I've only got as far as avidly reading the Documentation - yes, those files, With PFE. Taking your points: Should run a dream in that configuration - a half decent Win 3.1 system would do it well enough. As I understand, you need a fair bit of space if you want to add X-Windows applications - 500 Mb has been mentioned - a basic text mode system could run in a lot less. As I understand, you can install it into: It's own partition - and my CD includes FIPS, a program to trim a DOS or Win 95 partition (NOT OSR2 FAT32). A DOS directory - (not recommended) So you need to format a PARTITIONm but not an entire HD. And boot/select it from: The LILO boot selector, located in: The "Active" (linux) Partition, with a choice to boot other partions. The MBR, as the "boot program", at high risk of being removed by - a Windows 95 installaton. Or LOADLIN, which boots it from the DOS prompt or a CONFIG.SYS menu. Or a boot floppy. So you CAN have two operating systems - with the boot floppy being the line of least disruption. How am I doing, folks? Now I really MUST get round to installing it myself. If you really want to compile on that machine, maybe if you put the sticky bit on the gcc files, like gcc, cc1, as, cpp, it would help alot.
