I was wondering what my alternatives are? I was thinking maybe I could set up a mail/news server locally, which my BBS gateway software could 'connect' to, and then I can dial my ISP and let the mail server exchange with the ISP. Is this possible, and how? Do addresses specified in an MX record need to be permanent, or will mail spool on that server until the destination machine appears (I dial in)? Yup, your right about that. I can't say that I really NEED to have Linux RedHat as an OS. I thought I would try and pick up something new. I have no intentions of going to school for it but I will tinker with it now and then. RedHat has 3 books that I will eventually read that should help; Teach Yourself Unix in 24 Hours, RedHat Linux Unleashed and Apache Server Survival Guide. I will most likely NEVER have a multi-user system. I mainly got RedHat ecause I thought 50 bucks was a low-risk investment for an OS. I have to be honest and admit to myself that Windows (even Win95), has it all for me. Even though this fact remains true, I still would like to learn Unix. I will eventually install Win98 but RedHat will have a drive of it's own. M. --- CDRMail 1.20 / FastEcho 1.46+ * Origin: HamRadio Connection Fridley, Mn. I am pretty sure that I installed Dosemu so once I read about it and try it I will let you know. I have had problems with my sound card and hope that it will work under Linux. I have an ESS AudioDrive with an ES1(orI)868 control interface. I have no documentation for it but it does work. It is not working under Dos. I don't know the proper set-up for my config.sys file. I know that it should be working but all I could do so far was to try some generic Sound Blaster type commands. I am hoping I can get it to work with Linux. I believe the best approach to learning is to purchase a good reference book on Linux (University book stores are good suppliers of such material). While you are learning I would also suggest repartioning your drive(s) so that you can run both DOS and Linux. That way you can have the both of best worlds while you learn Linux. When you find you are typing Linux commands on a DOS prompt then you know that you are ready to make the switch. :) Maurice --- Msged 4.30 beta * Origin: ZOLTAN -> Ladysmith, BC (250) 245-7168 (1:351/255) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 241 LINUX Ref: F5G00244 Date: 04/26/98 From: FRANCOIS THUNUS Time: 03:38pm \/To: DON WAYBRIGHT (Read 2 times) Subj: Advice for Beginners?????
