I've in the last week downloaded 0.97pl_something, 1.0 and yesterday 1.2, and with minor tweaking ( and for 1.2 using the -DIS_REDHAT) flag, to which end the system compiles, but *every time* I try to run fmbedit, the program gets to the stage where it says that it can't open the log-file, then cores out. The scary thing is, os/2 is a notch above NT when it comes to that sort of thing, it at least has a built in full featur (and then some) scripting lang (REXX). Depends on what the person installs.........a *lot* of stuff can be eliminated. One easy way to cut down on what's installed is to use the Expert mode of installation. How do I know this? Just finished installing RH 5.0 several times on a 270 meg partition (which included X Window but not the X multimedia stuff) and omitting stuff I know I'd never use; ended up using only 133 meg. :-) --- Sqed/32 1.14/r15155 * Origin: T-Shirts 'N Genes BBS - (250) 748-3408 v32b v42b XA CM (1:340/204) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 241 LINUX Ref: F5G00019 Date: 04/12/98 From: SIMON HUGGINS Time: 12:14pm \/To: STEVE MARTONAK (Read 2 times) Subj: Dosemu (was Setterm and colors) Hi, SM> Exactly what I needed. I didn't mean "derived" in the sense of what the GPL (I think) calls a "derivative work" -- i.e., including code. More along the lines of an operational similarity. Didn't Linus work from a book on the design of the Unix kernel when writing the first version of Linux? SS> In Linux, you have a grande mishmash of collected GNU/other utils, varying SS> from distribution to distribution, with the only commoner being the kernel. This is true. And, you know, I can't decide if I think this to be good or bad. Diversity is good, because people can tailor distributions to suit different needs (e.g. the recent rumours of "NetscapeOS", which for the life of me I can't imagine being something I'd want to use). Singularity is also good, because it means you know exactly what you're getting when you install an OS. Looking at /usr/src/linux/ now, I see in the arch/ subdirectory code for Alphas, Intel systems, 68k systems, etc, etc ... Surely this is "a single, common kernel source tree"? [To Jani] From /usr/doc/HOWTO/Tips-HOWTO.gz : ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.10. How do I stop my system from fscking on each reboot? Dale Lutz, dal@wimsey.com Q: How do I stop e2fsck from checking my disk every time I boot up. A: When you rebuild the kernel, the filesystem is marked as 'dirty' and so your disk will be checked with each boot. The fix is to run: rdev -R /zImage 1 This fixes the kernel so that it is no longer convinced that the filesystem is dirty. Note: If using lilo, then add read-only to your linux setup in your lilo config file (Usually /etc/lilo.conf)
