Hi, I'm new to this echo, and my experience over the past 4 years has been with OS/2. I *love* OS/2, but after hearing from friends how powerful Unix/Linux is, I'd like to know how it would suit my needs, and if I'll gain anything over OS/2 with it. I'm not quick to leave the world of OS/2, but maybe I'll install Linux on another drive or partition, and gradually switch over. My situation is: - i486DX2/66, 16meg RAM, 250meg HD, 2x CD-ROM, 16-color EGA graphics, mouse. - I'm running a DOS-based BBS, text based. Its very disk-intensive. I would like to know all about Linux's file system. HPFS saves wear on my poor 'HD. - I like OS/2 because I can customise what I need to use. - My part-time business involves me testing all kinds of computer hardware. - All my apps that I run are text-based, but I like OS/2's WPS because its completely object oriented. BUT, I don't want the GUI to hog all my resources. I don't want 209302993 megs of GUI if I'm only running in EGA!!! - I'm *always* multi-tasking. Not so much threading, though. - I know programming, but don't want to spend my Friday nights working on it. - OS/2 doesn't crash. This is what sold me, and probably will with Linux too. Anybody have any experiences to share converting from OS/2 to Linux? I'd like to hear how PRACTICAL and RELIABLE Linux is. If so, hey, maybe I'll switch. TTYL! I know my way through linux reasonably well, TCP/IP doesn't worry me, neither does shell scripting. And before you tell me to read the man page... did that, still un"clear as mud".. Stage 1: At this time, I don't have a permanent connection, I just run a script, that logs me into the ISP and I extract my assigned IP number using another script. To begin with, I'd like sendmail to be able to log into my ISP's mailbox and collect my mail and send any outgoing mail. Stage 2: Later on I might get a fulltime dialup connection with static IP, my own domain name and mail forwarding from my ISP using their SMTP gateway, with processing done here for any users for {mail-user-name}@my.domain.com. At that stage, I'd also be looking at resolving the full name for any users from their logon/short internet mail name. At the end of this, I hope to set up some free/non profit web and mail hosting for my local area and some special interest groups (maybe??). Any details on stage one of this project would be realy helpfull. Once I get the financial but sorted out, I might move on to stage two. Maybe some of you could even post (or email) your working versions of your sendmail.cf files. I think the first time installation of BBBS is VERY slick. Just run bcfg4 once and you're off. As far as crashing goes, I've never ever witnessed a BBBS crash. However, BBBS is a bit scrace on the informative messages side so sometimes things might seem crashy or you start thinking "this MUST be a bug".
