There is a bit of discussion going on about the validity of the FTS-0001 specs, but the bottom line is that P4 requires it. ++ Jim ++ ...DISCLAIMER: The statements in this message are the personal opinions of the author and should not be construed as having any official connotations of any kind. ... Well, unfortunately (maybe) I was raised on computers when we had to write our own BIOS and compile it before we could get the computer to run. With Win95, we must run what Bill Gates thinks we should run. For example, if I left my laptop on for more than 8-12 hours, the hard drive light was always on, and it would take forever to get it to do anything. I finally tracked it down. (And, it wasn't easy!) It seems that when I installed Excel97, a program called 'findfast' was installed and was set to do a lot of searching of files. It doesn't take long before the computer is spending all of it's time updating that database. What this program has to do with Excel is beyond me, but that's what installed it. See? Bill Gates decided that I need it. POINTS: Linux has a similar function. When unboxed from Slackware, it runs everyday at 0740 and updates the database. It runs just exactly once a day. No more. It's a system hog during those couple of minutes that it's running, but once it's done, it's all over. Linux has the PS command that will show me everything that is currently running on the computer. The only way to get that, that I can see, under Win95 is to press ctl-alt-del. Once I have a list of what is running, under Linux I can type 'man whatsit' and a manual page comes up that tells me all about that function. In Win95, there are several in that list that I don't have the foggiest idea of what they do, who put them there, or why they are there. Here's 3: Csusem32, Csinsem32, Em_exec. The machine at the office comes up with three windows at boot-up time. They all say the same thing. They want to know how to open some off-the-wall file. I can't even find the file on my hard drive. I have been all through the start-up files and I find nothing that seems to be calling that file. With Linux, I have all of the start-up scripts readily available for me to examine, and alter. I also have 'grep' as a tool to search through all of the files to find keywords that are bothering me. KL> Unix can run for months at a time unattended... MG> Right now, trying to figure Linux out, I'm having lots of MG> trouble, with Floppies, ZipDrives, CDROMs, Sound, etc. Linux is not easy to learn. Especially if all/most of your experience has been with Windows. There is (thankfully) no plug-'n-pray with Linux. I've had some major fights with Windows because it demands to do the IRQ assignments. Sorry! I =KNOW= the assignments I want to give to IRQ's. I've used everyone of them in that box. Several times Win95 has doubled up on IRQ's rather than using a unique one. Floppies are easy to deal with. Your ZipDrive may be problematical. However, Iomega claims that they do support Unix. Hassle them a bit by phone (at $14.95 per call). Check their web page. I suspect that your life will be easier on the Zip Drive if you have a SCSI interface, rather than a parallel interface. I traded my Zip drive in on a CD-Rom burner. Zip disks are $13 each (minimum). Blank CD's are $2 each (or less). Zip disks hold 100 megs. CD's hold 680 megs. Zip disks can be erased and used over. The $15 CD's can be erased and used over. Most everyone has a CD drive, not so for a Zip drive. (I've digressed!) CD-Rom drives are pretty easy to get in place and working. Slackware will do it automatically. Most other distributions that I've looked at don't. Which I think is pretty stupid. They have just used a CD to install the whole thing and they can't be bothered to put in a half-dozen lines of script to automatically load the CD-drive. Tell us the distribution that you have installed, and tell us the messages that you are getting, or what's not happening when you try to do things. There is a LOT of expert help here. No question is too dumb! And, we all know how frustrating it can be! ++ Jim ++ ...DISCLAIMER: The statements in this message are the personal opinions of the author and should not be construed as having any official connotations of any kind. ... I am not to happy with the lack of Newbie Support that Linux has. I am a bit worried about software from a company that doesn't have the FORESIGHT to make an easy install for first ime users. Lucky for them I had a little experience trying to install Ygdrassil (which was also a failure). After some thought I think that I was given info at the first Login Prompt. t first says Login Host, but after one wrong attempt it only says Login. I will assume that I should login as "Host". Again I am met by the ASSUMING rogramer failing to make proper algorithims for something as simple as an install program. I hope all of the trouble is worth it. I have had Win '95 uptimes of several weeks, as well, but it's just a basic fact that a Windows system getting raped by lots of users daily is a lot more crash-prone than a Unix system doing the same. But yes, Windows can be rather stable. MG> Right now, trying to figure Linux out, I'm having lots of trouble, MG> with Floppies, ZipDrives, CDROMs, Sound, etc. Well, did you recompile the kernel?
