I've been avoiding emacs like the plague, but maybe it's time, I think. Well, I've spent about half a day, first learning the basics of info (MANY keys do not work as advertised), and then reading emacs docs. I find no mention of html. I find that emacs will not even insert characters in an existing file! Have I been the victim of a cruel joke? Will some one estimate how long it should take to learn to do even simple text file editing with emacs from a dead start? JR> If you need that much memory you need a lot more than a Pentium... Actually, no, you could patch a pentium with memory expansion boards, like in the good ol' times, and tell the kernel to use it as very high priority swapping. You could then consider your total memory (both motherboard and expansion) as your RAM, and your motherboard memory as your cache. :-) Another way is a paging chip. That's why they did on the old TRS-80 Color Computers to allow the 6809 to address 2 megs (21-bit) address space instead of 64k (16-bit). This now could be expanded to any damn number of bits you like, like 64-bit address space... I bet one of the first PC solutions to that problem will be either of these two. matju --- Terminate 4.00/Pro * Origin: The Lost Remains Of SatelliteSoft BBS (1:163/215.42) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 241 LINUX Ref: F3N00006 Date: 03/17/98 From: MATHIEU BOUCHARD Time: 02:02am \/To: JASON SNYDER (Read 3 times) Subj: Linux and 128MB RAM JS> Well from my reading, that is only the physical addressing limit.
