Why should I spend a bunch of timing writing utilities that someone else has already done quite well? That way I can concentrate more on the BBS part. If necessary I will even make sure that my own system interfaces well with ifmail/ifcico. --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 * Origin: The London Underground * 630-736-8478 * V.34 * (1:115/858) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 241 LINUX Ref: F3D00006 Date: 03/04/98 From: JOHN BURTON Time: 05:07am \/To: DARREN BRAUN (Read 5 times) Subj: Re: BBSs for linux darren@firewater.theboard.com (Darren Braun) said: > Just in case you didn't know they have a HOW-TO out for ifmail now. This is sloppy, I haven't had much time to put into it recently, but it may give you some ideas. Some of the message routines I've had to enhance in C, as there where no decent "secure" news posting routines for web pages. Of course I still prefer to use TIN and the shell envoronment for my own use. > Any ideas folks??? Yes, don't give up on IFMAIL, and ICICO it works. I haven't had any downtime in close to 2 years. I have no ethernet card. I just want a ppp- connection between two pc's thro' a modem. I read the pppd howto's , dip howto's and agetty how-to's but i haven't figured a way out to make my machine pick up the modem when a call came in. The pppd how-to says that instead of /bin/login as my shell i should use /usr/sbin/pppd, but that does not help me pick up the phone, it only helps when locally i enter the login name i get ppp packets. The dip-howto says to put dip -i instead of /bin/login i.e. diplogin and then configure /etc/diphosts for the serial line. I did with the tty devise name as ttyS2 as my modem is on cua2 Irq 5. Still no go. I tried agetty but i don't think it's made for picking up the phone.I tried agetty by giving it the -I option as ats0=1, but i does not work and i have learnt that after the modem picks up, then only does the -I < argument> gets sent to the modem. Do i need anything like mgetty specially for picking up the modem and the handing over the controls to pppd or can i do it with the help of dip/agetty or something. Please do help me. I just compiled a new kernel (well, perhaps it is not so new - 2.0.27) with ppp and sound. Other than those two items it is basically pared down to the bare minimum required to run on my system properly. This thing weighs in at over a megabyte (compressed). It seems to work well, but I believe the last time I did a kernel it was around 400k (very similar configuration). Have I done something wrong, or do I have (a) defective memory?
