How's it going? Just been for something of a bit of a surf-around, and had a bit of a check-out on the Debian site, and from at least what I heard, the gnulibc release of Debian was supposed to come out January, and although some Americans might still be in January, its Feb here, and it seems that nothing has developed...yet. Is there anyone here who might be on the Debian team or would know otherwise when we could expect the release to eventuate? CB> Either the cables don't work or Linux decided to reject my CB> settings when I configured the mouse for COM2. Anybody know how CB> what's wrong here? Yeah, and its not a linux problem, but rather an architecture problem matey. "Com2" and "Com4" share the same IRQ, whereas "Com1" and "Com3" do too. For this reason, a modem and mouse can't share two even "Com" addresses, i.e. mouse on 2 and modem on 4, they have to be in an even-odd configuration, like for example the mouse on one and the modem on 4. Technically, the mouse and modem can be on even-even "com" ports, buy way of changing the IRQ on one of the com ports to another IRQ that is unused by your system, but I'll only go into that if you really need to have the setup that you want that way. The modem was set up for com4 and irq5, but I misread it somehow, and was getting all sorts of conflicts between the modem and my sound card. Which means, after In most default installations the serial port assignments are as follows: IRQ line I/O port address COM1 4 3f8 COM2 3 2f8 COM3 4 3e8 COM4 3 2e8 Notice the duplication of IRQs. This will NOT work (without a special serial board designed for this). This is no doubt a holdover from ancient times when there were about 2 free irqs available. On my system I have the following: IRQ line I/O port address COM1 4 3f8 COM2 3 2f8 COM3 5 3e8 COM4 9 aka 2 2e8 I had to go out and buy a 16-bit serial board to get COM4 because my old 8 bit one had only 4 3 5 7 available. 5 and 7 are normally LPT ports. My stupid BIOS only allows those two for LPT ports. SB is on 10, which leaves me IRQ 11 and 12 free for future use. :) Many of them are used by the system. cat /proc/interrupts to see which ones are in use. 2 and 9 are basically the same; you can use one but not both. You should set them manually in one of your boot scripts (etc/rc.boot/0setserial for Debian and I think Red Hat, /etc/rc.d/rc.serial for Slackware) like this: # MANUAL CONFIGURATION # # If you want to do manual configuration of one or more of your # serial ports, uncomment and modify the relevant lines. # ############################################################### # These are the standard COM1 through COM4 devices # ${SETSERIAL} -b /dev/cua0 uart 16550 port 0x3F8 irq 4 spd_vhi ${STD_FLAGS} ${SETSERIAL} -b /dev/cua1 uart 16550 port 0x2F8 irq 3 ${STD_FLAGS} ${SETSERIAL} -b /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550 port 0x3E8 irq 5 ${STD_FLAGS} ${SETSERIAL} -b /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550 port 0x2E8 irq 9 ${STD_FLAGS} Adjust to taste. :) Ed eds@lightspeed.bc.ca --- FEddi 0.9pl7 via ifcico * Origin: On the point of disaster * Vancouver, BC * (1:153/831.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 241 LINUX Ref: F2200043 Date: 02/01/98 From: ED SUDA Time: 04:16pm \/To: PATRICK MORAN (Read 4 times) Subj: Installation On 31 Jan 98 18:46:00 in a message to Ed Suda, Patrick Moran wrote: >> was also from Open DOS but it must be close to a year old by >> now.
