Subj: Questions about Linux
DG> Hello all you Linux gurus out there !
I wish :)
DG> A co-worker keeps telling me that Linux is a dreamboat OS
DG> compared with DOS and WIN95.
Wise man.
DG> I'm curious to try it but I know nothing at all about it.
Originally, UNIX for the PC but now it's availible for x86, SPARC, Alpha, SGI
(not done and only a rumor), 68k (Mac, I think), PPC (guess that's PowerPC)
and maybe some more.
The source code for everything (some distributions include commercial things
without source however) is availible and included in all distributions.
It's fast as hell. It'll squeeze out every drop of power from the most crappy
computer to the new, top-of-the-line monsters.
DG> I'm equipped with a Pentium 133 MHz, 2 X 2.5 Gig HD and 96
DG> Meg RAM. Will it be suffiscient or is Linux one of these
DG> monsters that requires just about 1 terabyte of ram to fire
DG> up slowly like you know which OS ;-)
Barely, you'll need a minimum of 2MB RAM and at least a 386.
You'll need about 2 MB of HD space for a very minimal installation, but I
think you can squeeze in.
:-D
I run Linux on a p166 64MB ram and 1.4GB HD and on another computer one which
is a 486 20Mhz with 8 MB RAM and 80 MB HD. They run perfectly without a
single problem.
The only difference between the two computers is the speed when compiling
stuff. And not that much, really.
only when doing CPU-intensive stuff, like compiling. Otherwise the response
time (even from the 486 20Mhz) is zero.
I think to run Linux with EMACS (the best editor ever), X (GUI, y'know, kind
of like Windows, but it works) and a C compiler and everything else you need
about 400 MB HD.
The cool thing is you can run a network even if you don't have network cards,
I connect my computers with a parallel cable (printer cable) and run TCP/IP
through it. I run http and ftp server (locally) which is really cool.
My p166 is also a firewall for my network.
DG> I don't recall seeing anything called Linux in stores around
DG> here. Is it a rarety or is it a well known OS?
It's not "sold" in computer stores that much since it is FREE.
Look at www.linux.org for info on how to get it on CDROM (for a VERY, very
small cost).
Also, if you have a fast (or free) Internet connection you can download it
all for free (it's FREE).
Some URLs:
www.redhat.com (or .org, can't remember)
www.debian.org (I think)
www.linux.org
DG> Please fill me in folks! The more I'll know from you the
DG> better the decision will be.
Linux rules the cosmos (it's right up ther with Quake :))

What offline function? If you means reading .html files from the disk it
does it very well. If not, please explain more....

So, to boot totally from the floppy it would be:

for the next CD set, downloading takes to much time, while the newest version
is 47 MB.

Oh, it doesn't have to be 02:49 to get you cross eyed about some of
these things..
You forgot to mention what Window Manager you're using.
Red Hat 4.2 (my install) installs 'fywm95' and that's a *really*
hairy one to understand. Trust me, I've given up!
I installed LessTiff - the MoTif lookalike. It's kind of a small
free version of MoTif. Lacks a bit of features though, but works fine.
This gave me access to 'mwm' (Motif Window Manager?) and that one
was a whole lot easier to configure.
Try it out, or follow someone elses help!
Regards, HasseMan
