For me it's not a matter of using one xor the other. Both have their good points. I don't see Fidonet being superseded by "The Internet" so long as sysops continue to do an excellent job. Speak of the devil (as they say)... according to the latest Fidonews Zone 1 and Zone 2 just lost over 200 nodes last week - each! That may be misleading but it isn't good... I find mine running plenty fast on my AMD K5 166 w/16 meg. I did run it blind for a while when users had a problem grabing msg's. the zmodem just would not go. Found if I set the baud rate back to reasonable 38,400 I could use the regular sysop screen. To run blind I ran 'bbbs.exe 2 1 /dev/cua1' and ran the second node and used spy to see what a user was oing. On another note I have asked about having BBBS/L send/receive UUCP E-mail but have not been able to set that up yet. I do run UUCP out a second port. I get mail from a Fido hub and UUCP from my ISP. Any help or suggestions for that ? I think that 1x was 150K/second. 100x then would be 15,000K or 15MB/second. That is, I think, within (or almost within) the capability of the new UIDE interface. The problem is that even if it were physically possible, it would be pointless. Because the lens and focusing servo are so bulky, the bottleneck with any modern CDROM drive is the track-track seek time, not the data transfer rate. I'll keep my 10x, thank you very much.
