JN> Man. I can't believe you just said that. Ohh my god. QUAKE can't JN> compete? Have you even played the shareware version!? You're one sorry JN> fella. Here is my bit to add to the Quake/Duke 3D 'who's the best' debate. I enjoy playing Duke3D. It is comical and exciting at the same time. We're all vandals at heart, so I love the interaction with the environment i.e. shooting up loos, palmtrees, dustbins, windows etc. Duke3D has a few neat tricks, like walking over a corpse and leaving bloody footprints, or the TV monitors or like in the first episode the projector showing a movie. Quake for me is different. The scare factor is greater and I find the graphics more realistic than Duke3D. I really see Quake as DooM 2, rather than the pumped up DooM 1 sold as DooM 2. Rather than fighting over who's game is best, both should take features from each other to enhance their games. Quake has no environment interaction because it is meant to be played over a network with a group of people. Who cares about shooting up a wall or a dustbin? The swimming and underwater scenes are definitively better then in Duke3D and the gasping for air is brilliant. The Quake weapons are okay (particularly the nailguns), but the animation of the shooting can be improved. In DooM 1 the shotgun had good animation. Or in Duke3D putting a new clip in the handgun. Also reloading is too fast in Quake. Also automatic a new weapon coming up if your ammo runs out is wrong. What about some sickening clicks of an empty chamber as you're being savaged by a monster? The explosions in Duke3D are better than in Quake, but the richoteting of the grenade is better than Duke's pipe bomb. I like Duke's spoken lines. Maybe out of character in Quake, but just like in DooM it is only grunts, cries and shrieks. Doesn't anyone or anything talk? I am not sure I like the 'better' AI of the monsters. In DooM, they came after you so you could ambush them. In Quake they pretty much stay where they are. Does anybody agree/disagree? With every new game coming up from Wolfenstein-->DooM-->Heretic-->Hexen -->Duke3D-->Quake, the engine gets faster, the graphics more realistic and the possibilities better. Some games put more emphasis on the environment (Duke3D), others on atmosfere (Quake). --- FastEcho 1.45b.b3/McMail 1.0g5 * Origin: THR BBS +31-70-3401534 - VFC (2:281/534) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 240 APOGEE GAMES Ref: DDH00000 Date: 09/12/96 From: RAYMOND TOMPKINS Time: 09:28am \/To: ALL (Read 3 times) Subj: Programming Languages I would like to create some games in an Apogee like environment. Well where do you think they got Duke 3d from? All the games are now like doom. The fact that Quake's graphics and gameplay are better is because they spent well over a year developing it!
