NULF (Read 1 times) Subj: Game analysis... On (27 Sep 96) William Nulf wrote to Bruce Moon... WN> So this is Chess on the internet...FICS. Are you completely and absolutely sure your notes for the game belong to THIS game and not, perhaps, some other game? I have proceded as if they do, but not without serious doubts. To paraphrase a line from M*A*S*H: "It as chess, and we were on the Internet -- but other than that--..." WN> Not one of my best games but it is tactically interesting. It is a WN> Ruy Lopez exchange variation. The Morphy variation of 3....a6 is WN> standard, but this 3....d6 causes the knight sacrifice to double pawns. WN> The semi-open b file is poor compensation. That is NOT a Knight "sacrifice" -- it's an *exchange* (hence the name "Exchange Variation") -- although, technically this is an Exchange/Old Steinitz hybrid. Secondly, the exchange was premature. 4.d4 was better. WN> 4.Bxc6+ gives White 2 pawns and the attack for the black bishop. What is *this* blithering? At move 4, a WHITE Bishop is exchanged, but no BLACK Bishops have yet been taken (or even moved!) and no Pawns have yet been taken by either side. Perhaps you meant 12.Bxh6 instead of 4.Bxc6+, in which case the Bishop in question is also not a "black" Bishop, but hite's "black-square" Bishop. Otherwise, your comment MUST refer to some other game. WN> tactically it worked very well...the three pawns (kp knp krp) WN> created a Pawn storm costing black a rook to stop. When *I* played it through, it looked as though Black had lost his Queen for a Rook and a couple of Pawns. This loss of the exchange, however, was NOT a consequence of the passed Pawns. It was caused by Black not playing the best moves (see my next note). On the other hand, perhaps this comment ALSO belongs to another game. WN> In the end it is Blacks poor devlopment 11....Bc8 lets White WN> dominate the center and the kingside. Although Black's early Bishop foray 5...Ba6 was poorly planned and came to naught, and 11...Ng4 was better in my opinion, White never "dominated" the center (until about move 50) and his Kingside attack basically failed. In fact, 26 moves after the Bishop-for-two-Pawns trade, White has STILL not achieved either a material or positional advantage. Worse yet, at move 9, *Black* has a forced win with 39 Rhxf5!, but captures with the other Rook instead. After White retreats the Queen with 40 Qd2, Black can still win with 40...Qf8! -- but grabs the Pawn instead (with 40...Qxg6+??), giving *White* a forced win (which he finds). I am looking for a chess program that I once had, but unfortunately got rid of. It was a program that was not too far advanced, and the thing that I liked the most about it was that the board appeared on the screen just like a 3D picture that could be adjusted to a certain extent as far the slant at which it was seen. Mind you, this is not the 3d Chess game that is played on several levels, or several layers on top of each other. This was simply chess as it us usually played. If any of you know of the particular program that I am writing about, I would appreciate a word from you and possibly how I can get a copy of that program again. Thanks.
