You know old friend, I see some potential problems with your experiment: a. Battery life b. Bulb life c. staying in a position that exposes the back of your knee. I think I may be on to a better idea. If i remember correctly, the experiments were conducted on overseas travelers to help eliminate flight lag. Why don't you and I volunteer to fly to Australia with lights attached to our legs. Hey! Since it would be a double blind experiment I think the results would have grater significance than the others. What do you say? Your the Psycho chologist anyway. I'll start planning the trip, you start writing the NIH grant. I guess this is at least a start. I agree, though, I would like to see the decision appealed and a more reasonable approach taken. I love Hawaii and would like to visit as often as possable. When going for vacation, leaving the dog at home is really no big deal to me. However, when I am there on business, I prefer Ortho to a cane and I'll be damned if I'll walk around and into meetings latched on the arm of one of my colleagues. I know it is only my perception, but I feel more powerful when in total control of my mobility. I see myself as a much weaker individual when traveling sighted guide. If I'm going up against the best in a negotiation or mediation, I don't need any additional signed of weakness. i want my dog! Heck, those guys ive me a hard time and Ol' Ortho will chomp on their leg! (grin) HH> but the use of implanted microchips to monitor the whereabouts of HH> the dogs concerns me since it may be possible that by monitoring HH> the dog they could know what the master is doing. Where the heck is hawaii going to get the funds to pay for all the monitoring? Sounds like a lot of man power to me. Hey! I got an idea! Why not get one of the Consumer Organizations to have their annual meeting in hawaii. The other major Organization prior to the meeting, train their members on the onitoring equipment. Then approach the government of hawaii with a proposal for them o not only hire qualified individuals to monitor the dog guides, but they would also be hiring the handicapped making their hiring minority goals look much better. You want to give it a whirl? Let's put something together, get the National Organizations to purchase our airfare and hotels. I know this great little place near the Bonzai Piplene that will knock your sox off. What does he want to study?Does he have any idea where he wants to attend school? Does he have an Internet provider? If he does, maybe he and Aaron could say hi again. He is at: hkasten@startext.net Did Jonathan ever tell you about the time he and Aaron crashed and burned at Crystal Mountain? Crystal Mountain is a drainage wash where the kids would ride their bikes or walk to and play. they could find crystals, thus, the name. Anyway, they were standing on the edge of the ravine when it caved in. aaron got hung on a branch, Jonathan escaped and ran all the way back to the house to get help. We rushed out their with thoughts of Aaron covered in several feet of dirt or at least with a broken bone. Of course I hadn't called for any help. Well we got there just as aaron was pulling himself up over the edge. Dirty and scraped, but no less the wear. Aaron hasn't lost his sense of adventure. Last summer he hiked for six weeks across Israel. This summer should be a bit less strenuous, but certainly as adventurous. He'll be an Intern for US Congressman Bartlet and also a life guard at hurricane harbor (formerly Wet and Wild) I envy him. I was a life guard at his age. Only the kids I watched weren't 17 with string bikinis! (Grin) Anyway, send him our congratulations on the scholarships. Unfortunately, since this case was settled without a trial there is nothing to appeal. I can't post the article here for 2 reasons, 1 is that it is copyrighted and 2 it is too long to post in one message so I would have to break it into probably several messages. I was told by Jenine Stanley that the microchips do not monitor the whereabouts of the dog. They supposedly only identify the dog as a service animal much as bar codes on super market products identify them and are read by a scanner. But I think what Hawaii is saying in effect is that they know A.D.A. will probably require them to admit service animals so they will get back at us by making the process as difficult and expensive as possible so that people will not want to bring their dogs. This process is hard on both master and dog. And also remember that dog guides are not new to Hawaii. Only taking them to and from the mainland is. Blind residents of Hawaii have had dog guides for a long time. There was even a school in Hawaii at one time, but even when there wasn't blind Hawaiians got their dogs from Australia or New Zealand so the argument of educating the Hawaiian government in the travel ability of dog guide teams should not be necessary. I likewise did not customarily take my dog to conventions as I felt that the hectick schedule was too much to put on a dog, and by the time you got the dog and yourself fed and refreshed you weren't refreshed. But I would love for one of the national organizations to hold its convention in Hawaii because like I said, even when I had a dog it would not be a big deal to leave it home, but there are some people very radical about taking their dog no matter how hard it may be on the dog. But I don't think this so-called settlement will open that door. As for your other idea, I like it. But I no longer have a dog guide. However, I would like to see that place you're talking about.
