Hi gang, are you needing a smile today? If so, check out the following. A man is strolling past the mental hospital and suddenly remembers an important meeting. Unfortunately, his watch has stopped, and he cannot tell if he is late or not. Then, he notices a patient similarly strolling about within the hospital fence. Calling out to the patient, the man says, "Pardon me, sir, but do you have the time?" The patient calls back, "One moment!" and throws himself upon the ground, pulling out a short stick as he does. He pushes the stick into the ground, and, pulling out a carpenter's level, assures himself that the stick is vertical. With a compass, the patient locates north and with a steel ruler, measures the precise length of the shadow cast by the stick. Withdrawing a slide rule from his pocket, the patient calculates rapidly, then swiftly packs up all his tools and turns back to the pedestrian, saying, "It is now precisely 2:37 PM, provided today is May the twenty-second, which I believe it is." The man can't help but be impressed by this demonstration, and sets his watch accordingly. Before he leaves, he says to the patient, "That was really quite remarkable, but tell me, what do you do on a cloudy day, or at night, when the stick casts no shadow?" The patient holds up his wrist and says, "I suppose I'd just look at my watch." * * * * * * * * | BILL K. * | BILLSCOT * | @DIAC.COM * * * * * * * * * --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 * Origin: Wildcard BBS,Thornton,CO HST/V34+ +1-303-252-0491 (1:104/725) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 238 VISUAL DISABILIT Ref: EFR00004Date: 11/21/97 From: BILL KOPPELMANN Time: 06:56pm \/To: JIM KITCHEN (Read 0 times) Subj: news stuff Hi Jim, As you know, I've been using netscape mail for a while now, and I did a little tweaking today, and I'd like to know if you have any problems with reading my mail now. I am wondering whether anyone on this list might know of the whereabouts of Jeff Dubois who used to live in Toronto, was a college student, and posted regularly on Blink Talk for several years. Jeff wrote a silly limerick several years ago and posted it on Blink Talk. This silly limerick was something about a guide cow, that's right, a guid cow. It was hilarious to say the least. But no one knows of its whereabouts. So I thought that if I could locate its author, he might just happen to have it lying around somewhere. My sincere thanks to anyone reading this who may either direct me to Jeff or perhaps still has that poem in the humor archive. Take care. Blind people would ask the driver when the bus stopped if it was such and such bus. In Ottawa, bus drivers are often in the habit of announcing the route number e.g. 97 via Overbrook as they open the door. One idea someone has tried is to use a bus card with the number/letter of the bus you want on it. You hold it up at the bus stop and presumably the driver of the bus you want stops to pick you up, others go sailing past as they know you don't want them. Interesting that even standing at a bus stop the passenger has to flag down the bus. I've seen flagging done at places where there is no bus stop but not at a stop. Not sure what the solution is, but if buses are lightly used, having them stop to ask if the blind person wants that one might be an idea. The call card idea is workable too but only if you take the same buses regularly. Good luck to your friend on remedying the problem. ...
