From THE DAILY TELEGRAPH, of London. Tuesday, August 26, this year. By Tim King A blind woman who planned to buy a seaside flat has cancelled the purchase after her neighbours protested that she would be a fire hazard. The residents of Mannington Hall, a block of flats in Bournemouth, Dorset, drew up a petition when they learnt that Lorna Tandy, registered blind, was to move in on the first floor. Eight of the 12 neighbours, mostly retired, signed a statement saying that the first-floor, 2-bedroom flat which Mrs. Tandy, age 50, hoped to buy, was "not suitable for a blind person living alone". The statement said: "The danger from fire in particular and the general safety would be of concern to us all." The petition was delivered to the solicitor handling the conveyance. Mrs. Tandy, who was about to exchange contracts, pulled out of the sale. Speaking at her current home, a first-floor flat in Southill Road, Poole, which she shares with her guide-dog, she said: "I had my heart on the property and was intending to share it with a sighted friend." ...The Poole MP said he would be writing to..the minister for the disabled, about the case. He said it might be an argument for anti-discrimination legislation. The Royal National Institute for the Blind said: "This is blatant discrimination which displays a woeful ignorance on the part of the residents." An [87-year old] resident who signed the petition said: "We didn't bare her. We expressed concern because we thought ti was dangerous to have her living on the first floor. We didn't object to her living here because she was blind." end of article... My notes: This story was played out on London TV for a couple days. The lady seemed pretty bright. Her "sighted friend" was a man. Her dog was a Yellow Lab, I recall. chester ... Official rules for participation in BlinkTalk, the echo that deals with topics of particular interest to visually disabled persons: 1. Please allow the moderator to perform his job as he sees best, and ignore those who attempt to do his job for him! 2. Keep the forwarding of messages to and from BlinkTalk to a minimum because there is a greater than normal possibility of duplication due to the large number of participating sysops! 3. Messages should in some way relate to the stated topic of the echo, and although this topic is quite loosely defined, use of the echo for personal mail will not be tolerated! In general, this means messages that can be of interest to no person other than the individual to whom they are posted, such as the classic, "I called you saturday and you weren't home!", which belongs in netmail. Likewise, the forwarding of or responding to private netmail in the echo is absolutely forbidden! 4. Personal attacks will not be tolerated, no matter how much the jerk deserves it! 5. Due to the nature of the echo, it is permissable to introduce new products here, and even encouraged! Hard selling should be avoided, however, as should direct attacks on competing products! 6. Never use a bathroom in an unfamiliar location without first locating the toilet paper! 7. Use of the echo for illegal activities is forbidden! This includes such things as dispersal of pirated software, credit card numbers, copies of copyrighted material such as RFB and music recordings, etc. 8. It is paramount that the participants in BlinkTalk realize that one man's croutons is another man's dried bread! That is, just as your approach to blinkdom got you to where you are, a different approach may have been just as affective for someone else, so do consider this when replying to messages! 9. All messages should contain an origin line including the participating board's FidoNet address. BlinkTalk is, and has always been a FidoNet echo, and gating to other networks and/or mediums is permissable only with approval of the moderator. This echo is currently being handled on the FidoNet backbone, but the method of distribution is the sole decision of the moderator. 10. Above all else, think of BlinkTalk not as a nationwide forum for visual disabilities topics, but as a place where you can meet with fellow blinks and interested winks, and have a good time! We've got something good going here, and it is my intention that we keep it that way! They panicked and fled, leaving the chain still attached to the machine, their bumper still attached to the chain, and their license plate still attached to the bumper. IN THE BAG A "tourist," supposedly on a golf holiday, stood in line at the customs counter. While making idle chatter, the customs official thought it odd that the golfer didn't know what a handicap was. The officer then asked the tourist to demonstrate his swing. He did - backwards. A substantial amount of narcotics was found in the golf bag. MADE FOR TV Guns For Hire, an Arizona company specializing in staged gunfights for Western movies, got a call from a 47-year-old woman who wanted to have her husband shot. She was sentenced to four years in jail. DO YOU ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS? A Texan convicted of robbery worked out a deal to pay $9600 in damages rather than serve a two-year prison sentence. For payment, he provided the court a forged check. He got his prison term back, plus eight more years. YOU MEAN ME? A pair of Michigan robbers entered a record shop nervously waving revolvers. The first one shouted, "Nobody move!" When his partner moved, the startled first bandit shot him. DEADHEADS A man in Orange County Municipal Court had been ticketed for driving alone in the carpool lane. He claimed that the four frozen cadavers in the mortuary van he was driving should be counted. The judged ruled that passengers must be alive to qualify. THIS WOULD BE ME The judge called the case of People vs. Steven Lewon Crook. The bailiff opened the door to the holding cell and called, "Crook, come forward." Five of the prisoners entered the courtroom. LEARN YOUR LESSON When asked for her occupation, a woman charged with a traffic violation said she was a schoolteacher. The judge rose from the bench. "Madam, I have waited years for a schoolteacher to appear before this court," he smiled with delight. "Now sit down at that table and write 'I will not pass through a red light' five hundred times." AHH, THAT'S BETTER! A judge in Louisville decided a jury went "a little bit too far" in recommending a sentence of 5,005 years for a man who was convicted of five robberies and a kidnapping. The judge reduced the sentence to 1,001 years. OOPS! I BLEW THAT ONE! A lawyer defending a man accused of burglary tried this creative defense: "My client merely inserted his arm into the window and removed a few trifling articles. His arm is not himself, and I fail to see how you can punish the whole individual for an offense committed by his limb." "Well put," the judge replied. "Using your logic, I sentence the defendant's arm to one year's imprisonment. He can accompany it or not, as he chooses." The defendant smiled. With his lawyer's assistance he detached his artificial limb, laid it on the bench, and walked out. --- Via Silver Xpress V4.01 BEERISGOOD * Origin: BlinkLink - Perceiving is believing! 412-766-0732 (1:129/89) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 238 VISUAL DISABILIT Ref: EEA00000Date: 10/04/97 From: ANN SABONAITIS Time: 07:16pm \/To: ANNE PAGE (Read 0 times) Subj: HI HF, I FIGURED SOME THINGS OUT.
