If so, you are correct books could be reissued. I would suspect that whom ever undertook such a project c could work with the Smithsonian who have had a hand in reissuing a lot of old folk music. In any case, I would love to see it done. Ideally, and heaven knows we do NOT live in an ideal world, a single new format like the Digital format would be adopted, and everything Old and New. RFB and everything else would be converted to it. One can emagin a world where you would Download a book you wonted to read. but I'd be happy to see them stay with the cassette, and convert everything to a cassette useble format. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: BlinkLink - Perceiving is believing! 412-766-0732 (1:129/89.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 238 VISUAL DISABILIT Ref: EC500004Date: 08/04/97 From: DUANE IVERSON Time: 09:41am \/To: HARVEY HEAGY (Read 1 times) Subj: tape recorder with speech cpmpression Linda had a little tape recorder with, I think, a built in speech compressor. I was going to buy it from Jonathan, but don't know where she got it or how much it costs. I think it might have been a sonie. I have the Handi 2, but am not very happy with it. I read exclusively with the speech compressor. Do you know what is was, Where lInda got it, and how much she paid? --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: BlinkLink - Perceiving is believing! 412-766-0732 (1:129/89.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 238 VISUAL DISABILIT Ref: EC500005Date: 08/04/97 From: JIM FLETCHER Time: 05:54pm \/To: WARREN FIGUEIREDO (Read 1 times) Subj: I understand I understand from talking to my librarian at the Oklahoma Library for the Blind that they are required by federal law to keep a master copy of all books issued by the nls. So I think all those masters are already somewhere in each Library for the Blind. If anyone has different info I would appreciate a clearng of my mind. I don't think so. I've asked at both the Foundation and the Printing House. Plates would have to be stored and storage costs. I've been told that after a few years the masters of cassette books have also been destroyed. Charlie told me about that tape recorder with compression, but I don't know anything about it. You might get someone to read the brand and model number to you and then post around to see if anyone knows who sold it or if it is still manufactured. I understand their web site is not so speech friendly, even though they have a supposedly text one. Some of us blind people have written to them stating our disfaction with their text web site, and that we hope that they will correct the problem, so they won't have to loose their blind customers. So if any of you that are on the internet would like to write them, write to manager@cdnow.com. Even if you have not been a customer, tell them that you won't be able to be one unless they correct that problem. If you would like to check their web site, it is http://www.cdnow.com/txt.
