I still haven't found a copy of it in my BD> local area. I'll have to call an OPUS system and check it out. Bobby, Finding an Opus system is no minor task now adays, as most former Opus sysops have abandoned it due to unattention on the part of its developers. Actually, there was an update released just recently, but it didn't correct the major problems I personally find with the outdated software, so I didn't even bother making the switch. There are some facts about Opus that seem to slowly be eroding, however, that do deserve a little respect from all us as Fidonet users. First of all, it is the ligitimate son of the original Fido BBS program from which Fidonet developed, and in many ways they are quite similar in appearance, even today! Secondly, it is now and has always been blatantly free, the program itself a product of the hard efforts of many, most notably Winn Wagner, Doug Boone and most recently Trev Royhouse. Finally, and the main reason I've stuck with it up to this point, is it is the only system still around that requires no frontend for mail exchange, meaning nobody needs to hit the escape key and wait for the board to load when they call here, and yet BlinkLink accepts crash mail 24 hours a day! Opus recognizes the difference between humans and other Fido systems calling and behaves appropriately, and although I guess this isn't a big deal to everyone, it's something I got used to as a user here in what formerly was strongly Opus territory and I'm not willing to give up without a struggle. Anyways, with all that said, the main thing I wanted to tell you is, if you look at a Maximus board, it's very similar to Opus, or at least the menus appear almost identical. Maximus, when it was first released, was literally just Opus with the mail capability stripped, and it hasn't drifted that much in the subsequent releases either. The primary difference so far as speech is concerned is the lack of the "Talker" option in the full screen editor of Maximus, which means the user needs to either silence or ignore the position counter, but most, as I said before, are probably using the line editor or an off-line reader, so it isn't a big deal. As Eduardo said, any efforts a programmer makes to insure their wares are blind friendly are greatly appreciated though, so indeed, thanks for your attention to our needs! Willie ... [JA] I noticed when I was reading messages, forward command went backwards [JA] and [JA] back command went forward. I couldn't read much under info other than [JA] welcome message. I couldn't find anything to vote on. Aside from what The forward and backward ARE reversed since NorthStar displays messages from newest to oldest. I think you voted on everything on your first visit, didn't you? [JA] I [JA] tried, the system seemed to work quite nicely. It would be nice if I [JA] could [JA] telnet into your board through internet, but that would be involved. I'm looking into learning what's involved for that, but as of yet it'll be some time before I can do anything like that, unfortunately... In fact, an extremely large number of Fidonet boards have depended on US Robotics modems for years, and a vast majority of the mail hubs swear by them, or at least that's how it seems to me. I too regret that Ann has had a bad experience with US Robotics, but I sincerely doubt that her problem with them is a common one! There are few companies whose products I will swear by to the degree I will my US Robotics modems, and for what it's worth, I just thought I'd speak up in their defense. Willie ... It's strong points are telnet, ftp, the worldwide web, and it's ability to read newsgroups offline. it's shareware, which means that you can try it before you buy it. If you decide to register it, it's $35, which is very reasonable for all it does. It's fantastic! It also runs under DOS, as you pointed out, which is a big plus in my book. If you have access to the WWW, you can get it from David Colston's home page at www.delphi.com/people/davidcolston/ If you don't have access to the world-wide web, I'd be more than happy to mail you a disk with the program on it or I can call you over the phone and send it to you via modem. My employer still uses WordPerfect 5.1 DOS since he creates a lot of his own law office documents and isn't inclined to give up his old friend for new technology. So I'm on it every day at work even though I have WordPerfect 5.2 Windows and 6.0 Windows on my machine at home and use them on freelance assignments. On our office printer, a Panasonic Laser, the envelopes go in lengthwise as on yours. The same is true of my HP4L Laser at home. There are two keys to success. First, you must set the envelope format up in your computer. Second, you must run the envelopes one at a time manually using the envelope feeder area on your printer unless your particular printer has a way to adjust the inside dimensions of the paper tray to take a stack of envelopes which neither of the ones I am using has. In WP 5.1 DOS, I created a macro (named ALT-E) to make my envelope layouts and store the names and addresses as separate documents in a Mail directory by the first eight letters of the person's last name at the office, but you can also save them on separate pages in a single document by using the force new page command for each one. Then you can do a "find" for the name you want and print only that page to do the envelope. If someone else hasn't already solved your problem, I will be glad to print out the macro instructions line by line at the office and bring it home to post to you. It involves doing Shift 8, selecting paper size, selecting envelope in manual mode, etc. Then, when you are ready to print the envelope, you insert it in the slot on top of your paper tray length-wise and print it.
