Walter, I suspect it was out of date the day aft er I bought it I had hoped to get the new monster to work with my antique monitor, but no matter how much the video card was adjusted, it just couldn't get down to the level of my old monitor. (Actually, on the old monitor, a little fellow jumped out with a triangular stylus and etched the screen full of information on a clay tablet background. The clay just doesn't dry fast enough for the new speeds.) Anyway, my new computer has speech. It lacks video. My wife objected to this for some reason so a new monitor is in the offing. Ron ... Have you tried using the mode command to test the monitor? You might also put in or take out ansi.sys just to see if that would help. My final suggestion would be to get someone to see if something in the windows control panel could have messed up the video card settings. Do you use windows for anything other than arkenstone? If not, you might call them to ask if they've heard of a similar problem. I transfer messages LA> and other documents with ASCII by Internet, but it does not work LA> with Telnet. LA> I will appreciate any help you can offer. Lillian, Hopefully, Bob Humbert will respond to your message, as it is he who has successfully used Blue Wave with Telnet. In the meantime, here's all I can suggest off the top of my head. First of all, have you tried GBX.ORG as the source for your packets? It wasn't clear in your message if you were Telnetting to the same system as Bob, but if not, of course that is where to start. Secondly, I recall from a discussion here in the past that it may be necessary to include a command on your Telnet line to tell it to use 8 bit mode rather than 7 bit. I have never had to do so with my provider, I believe the critical factor being on their end, but perhaps with yours it is necessary. Try, for example, "telnet -8 gbx.org" and see what that gets you. Finally, have you spoken to your ISP about this? If it's anything like mine, the support people will know even less about this than you or I, but it may be worth a shot. It is my bet that the problem does have something to do with their Telnet configuration and something you need to do because of it, but again, this is just a guess and not a very informed one at that. Good luck, and let us know when you achieve success! Willie ... Re: Job Training Bill Passes (fwd) House Passes HR 1385 - Employment, Training and Literacy Enhancement Act of 1997 The House overwhelmingly passed HR 1385 at approximately 12:45 pm today. There was little controversy in contrast to the passage of the CAREERS Act almost two years ago. Congressman Buck McKeon (R-CA) introduced a package of amendments that addressed the areas that were unresolved in subcommittee and committee. These changes included: * inclusion of changes to Sec. 508 to improve use of assistive technology * "individual plan for employment" replace "individual written rehabilitation plan" - streamlines the process * improvements in due process hearings * added language to promote self-employment and small business development as an employment outcome * improved language for informed choice An expected amendment by Congressman Mark Souder (R-IN) to change the definition of "competitive employment" was not made. The bill reauthorizes the Rehabilitation Act for 3 years. Congressman William Goodling (R-PA), Chair of the House Education and the Workforce Committee said that the changes to the Rehabilitation Act were an interim step to allow the 106th Congress to do a more comprehensive review of Rehabilitation programs. The bill now goes to the Senate where we are told they plan to consider separately the job training provisions and the Rehabilitation Act. In a meeting with staff for Senator Jim Jeffords earlier this week I-NABIR was told that the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee plans to take a comprehensive look at the Rehab Act and will probably hold hearings in July or August. Final text of the House bill HR 1385 will not be available until next week. We will provide you with more information then and with instructions on how to download the bill for you "Internet Heads"! --- WtrGate 0.91.p1 beta Unreg * Origin: GaiaNet * 310-724-8965 (1:102/735) (1:102/735) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 238 VISUAL DISABILIT Ref: E5U00002Date: 05/16/97 From: LILLIAN.ACKLEY Time: 03:44pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: hi Dear Ann, I just wanted you to know that the reason I could not use Kathleen's BBS was that every time I went to long on, when I reached the place where I had to say that ANSI was disabled, I was 'booted out.' It was not my choice, but I just could not even get logged on. But that is okay, I now have three BBS's that I am Telnetting to.
