I understand that only some of the web is LG> accessable. With today's technology, I would say that more than some of the web is accessible. What I mean is that the 2 most popular browsers *Internet Explorer* and *Netscape* are pretty speech friendly. I have used both of them with Out Spoken, Window-Eyes, ASAW, and JFW. Some Windows screen access programs are more friendly with these browsers than others, but there are many pros and cons to the entire picture. Other than browsing, there is also ftp, usenet news groups, email, mudds, and telnet clients for the Internet. All of these can be done in a windows environment. I do it on a daily basis and have no access issues. Sure, there will always be some www sites that are not very accessible, however, more and more, lots of sites are easy to navigate through. If you have any more questions, please netmail, email or reply here and I'll be happy to help. Take Care!! Raul A. How to import an ASCII file into Microsoft Word for windows? Alt-I opens the Insert pulldown menu, then typing L lets you insert a file (the L is underlined, not the F). A Window will open with the names of the files in the default document directory. Assuming the ASCII file is not in the default directory, just type in the full path and filename, then press the Tab key to get the cursor t the next box, which asked what type of file it is. Use the down arrow key to highlight "IBM Text" (I think that is what it is) then press Enter. Word will convert the ASCII file to Word format. If you want to keep it as a ASCII file, use Notepad instead. --- timEd 1.10+ * Origin: SoundProof Point, Pittsburgh PA (1:129/26.2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 238 VISUAL DISABILIT Ref: E4K00000Date: 04/12/97 From: DAVID DONNELL Time: 02:22pm \/To: BRIAN LINGARD (Read 1 times) Subj: ACB convention in Houston On 03 Apr 97 19:43 I received this message: BL>MSGID: 1:163/266.0 3344648d BL>3 April 1997 Ottawa Canada BL>Ray: BL>I'll send you details to your internet address but you can reach BL>acb at (800) 424-8666 BL>ask for a convention package when they are ready. I will call and ask for a packet. I have a friend who is very active in the Texas chapter, Burns Taylor. There is a direct flight from Toronto to Houston on Air Canada which is a quite nice flight. I actually think the flight begins in Montreal. If you get lucky , you can catch a seat sale. The Via / Amtrack route is terrible, no direct way to Houston and most schedules will keep you on the train for at least three days or put you on a bus for the last four hours. I am going to try and make the convention because my family lives in the area and that gives me some cheap lodging. Forwarded message Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 09:51:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Kelly Ford To: Orientation and Mobility , blind-x@netcom.com, blindfam@maelstrom.stjohns.edu Subject: More on Senate and Guide Dogs Seems our government has gotten a bit more on the ball. Whatever this was all about it seems a bit ridiculous for it to have started. WASHINGTON (AP) -- A day after a blind congressional aide was prevented from entering the Senate, the lawmakers unanimoulsy agreed to open the door to guide dogs and made the chamber more accessible to others with disabilities. An aide to Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., was prevented entry to the Senate chamber Monday because she had insisted she be accompanied by her guide dog. The Senate sent a resolution to its Rules Committee that would assure isabled individuals any aids they may need when entering the chamber. In the eantime, the Senate unanimously voted to allow guide dogs or other aids by the isabled on the Senate floor, pending committee action. On Monday, when Moira Shea, an energy policy expert in Wyden's office sought access to the chamber, she was summarily rebuffed because she insisted on taking her dog, a yellow Labrador named Beau. Wyden asked his colleagues to allow the dog onto the historic Senate floor, saying that Ms. Shea relies on Beau wherever she goes -- including Senate hearings, office meetings and even nuclear weapons facilities. The four other senators in the chamber didn't care and the Senate seems to have no formal rules on guide dogs. But a Democratic lawmaker telephoned the cloakroom and raised an objection. And all it takes is one objecting senator to block access in a case such as this. ``A guide dog is a person's vision,'' Wyden said, accusing the Senate of violating the Americans With Disabilities Act by discriminating against blind people. Neither senators nor the Senate sergeant at arms would say who had objected, as such things often are done anonymously. But Senate sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Monday night the objection had been raised by Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., who is known for his strong views about Senate tradition. Telephone calls to Byrd's office went unanswered. Ms. Shea, 41, an economist who has worked for the government for 20 years as well as with the Brookings Institution, said she had been told last June that the Senate had an ``unwritten rule'' prohibiting guide dogs and the white canes used by the visually impaired in the Senate chamber. ``I can't walk away from it. I really need to defend my rights here,'' she said in an interview. Wyden agreed, saying on the floor, ``To tell someone like Ms. Shea she cannot come to the floor is demeaning.'' He said an offer that she could be escorted into the chamber by a Senate doorman was unacceptable. ``Ms. Shea is being treated differently simply because she is visually impaired,'' said Wyden. Greg Casey, the Senate's sergeant at arms, acknowledged that there is no Senate rule specifically on guide dogs, but added that access to the Senate chamber ``is a privilege that has to be granted. It's not a right to be given away. ... Dogs, animals, don't have privilege to the floor.'' Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he had no problem with letting the dog in, but raised the formal objection on behalf of the other senator, who had called he cloak room. After the objection was relayed, Wyden introduced a Senate resolution that would require that disabled people given access to the floor be allowed to bring along the ``supporting services including service dogs'' they deem necessary. The four other senators in the chamber at the time -- Sens. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., Frank Murkowski, R-Alaska, Richard Bryan, D-Nev., and Reid -- uickly asked to become co-sponsors. Only current and former senators, current House members and the four Senate officers automatically are allowed into the Senate chamber. Some designated staffers are allowed in routinely, but others -- including congressional fellows such as Ms. Shea -- must be formally approved for entry, and any senator may object. Such objections, however, are rare. ... You know, no U.S. Airline will propose flying from Ottawa to anywhere in the U.S. through Toronto. Same as on a trip to Istanbul I had planned a few years ago, absolutely no one proposed flying from here to Istanbul through New York which has some non-stop flights. Absolutely everyone, travel agent and airline alike said I would have to connect through London, paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Zurish, Madrid or Tel Aviv! I think I know why. air Turkey seems to be an I.A.T.A. carrier so your lugage will get checked through to city of destination, but Air Turkey' attitude on catching their flights is they don't book anything on another carrier, ever! Probably the worst connections from Ottawa to the U.S. are on Delta. They use Propeller Express Airways, their commuter airline from Ottawa to Boston then on to Atlantya. New York and Boston are also hubs for them but they have no useful flights from either of those airports for passengers originating in ottawa. ... "Mr. Worf, fire phasers at David" ...
