Last week I attended my uncle's funeral. Even at funerals a smile can come through. The funeral mass had ended and it was time for my uncle's casket to be rolled to the cemetery down the street. Just as the coffin was rolled across the curb, one of my five-year-nephews hollered "STOP" in the loudest voice he could muster. The procession halted and then he said "You're supposed to stop, look both ways and then go ahead. Don't you know that?" The pall bearers stopped and did as they were told. At least we know that the little boy paid attention to what they taught him in school. The system dies a slow and horrible death requiring a total power down to reset on the other roughtly twenty-nine. I listed a lot of the Windows95 software that RAG> I use successfully. Raul, I don't know about Charlie, but I never saw your message! I truly am interested in what Windows95 specific applications are being used successfully with speech though, so please, repost! Assuming you do have quite a list, something I still say is a rather rare phenomena, could you also tell me what advantages they have over their Dos counterparts? Obviously, preaching anti-Windows at this point would be like trying to put one's finger in a dike that is not only cracked but totally falling apart at the seams, perhaps even rightfully so, but for all my wanderings in this electronic medium, I've found primarily only 2 types of consistant Windows users. The first is the true experimenter, one who likes keeping up with the latest technology no matter what, and frankly, although that's where I used to come from, well, the thrill simply isn't there anymore so I spend far less time doing that than I used to. Seriously, I can appreciate the fact that there are those like you out there still getting a thrill out of playing with all the new releases of software, but frankly, I have more than enough OLD DOS programs to look at when I get bored than to worry about the latest and the greatest. Ok, the second type of Windows 95 blind user I know of are those who have literally just gotten into this game recently and haven't experienced the pure, 100% access with speech most of us enjoyed for years with good old text based Dos applications! Somehow, my just saying that seems to come across as if I'm suggesting that the development of the technology should be stifled so we, the visually disabled, can keep up, but that is not at all what I mean! On the contrary, I don't even think that would be right if we could do such a thing, but I've done nothing but witness the average productivity of the typical blind computer user drop as Dos disappears from the planet in favor of the GUI, and I defy anyone to prove this isn't the case! You can have all the keyboard alternatives in the world, and you can have the best speech and/or braille output available for any graphical user interface you choose, but until one can point and click with the efficiency of the typical sighted user, well, we're just fooling ourselves if we think we're keeping up! Of course we shouldn't just lie down and accept this, and active accessibility may indeed help us significantly, but until the GUI is abandoned by the general population for the even friendlier voice in and out interface we saw with the Starship Enterprise computer, well, blind access to the computer has to be seen as having taken a backward step with the GUI, at least so far as I am concerned! It's in the nature of the beast, the GUI designed to take advantage of an aspect of sight that can't be emulated with any auditory or tactile device, and although we MUST demand the ability to use these things with Windows 95, the facts are, it will ALWAYS be with but a portion of the ease and efficiency experienced by even the naive sighted user! Sorry if this sounds like I'm trying to rain on your's or anybody's parade, for in fact, I am not. I did, however, feel the need to share some of the exasperation some of us who long for the good-old-days are obviously feeling! Willie ... I think this would offer the children, and adults, the full power of electronic media and it's implication for full participation in all aspects of life, and especially career choices. If desired, the utility of braille can be added as needed, if the individual has special case situations for it's use. This would require a reorientation of current thinking to plan for future needs over political goals. The goal of all should be to embrace and push those tools which get the biggest bang for the buck. --- Via Silver Xpress V4.3 SW11977 * Origin: BlinkLink - Perceiving is believing! 412-766-0732 (1:129/89) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 238 VISUAL DISABILIT Ref: E1X00007Date: 01/27/97 From: MARK SENK Time: 06:38pm \/To: CAROLYN JOHNSON (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: repair the old GE rec Hi, That does seem out of line.
