No more of this sleepy nls stuff, the books BK>> made for sighted folks ears are tons better. I wonder if BK>> anyone else around here agrees with me. I haven't tried the books you seem to be talking about, and have missed the original message, but personally I think the readers from NLS do an excellent job. My experience to date has been that many of the commercially recorded books lack the quality of reading that NLS has, and unfortunately many are in condensed form, something which I personally find objectionable. As I said, I probably haven't tried the books you're writing about. Could you bore everybody else to death, and tell me more about the publisher, or write me Pcampbel@pen.k12.va.us. Several of you have asked about the release of my book. It is called Friendships in the Dark, and should interest those of you who are animal lovers. Check with your local book store. The publisher is Brett Books, and it is in hardcover. I have already had one newspaper interview, and one for a radio station. The publicity people called Friday to tell me that I will be having a television interview, and a live radio interview for a syndicated program on the radio. Yes, I'm excited. I also understand that the Matilda Ziegler will be reviewing it in December. The press of work has kept me away from here for a while, but I think I'm starting to catch up, that is until the Christmas season with added programs at school. Thank you, all of you who have expressed an interest in my book. Phyllis PHYLLIS CAMPBELL ... Hi ERic, Eric Troup wrote in a message to Harvey Heagy: ET> I won't address the support issue, but it would seem to ET> me that it's the blind person's responsibility to sell ET> his/her own abilities, not some agency's. No sighted person (snipping) ET> own abilities, thank you very much, and all I ask of rehab ET> is that they help pay any adaptive costs necessary. Makes sense. I do, however, think that any agency which operates a shelteredd sweatshop should be Making a real effort to educate employers in their area about blind folks, and do it in a positive way. Rehab by itself though can't do much. I think that the rehab system should concentrate itself on streamlining the process so that those of us who might need adaptive equipment etc for work don't have to go through much bureaucratic bullshit to get it done. I'll be asking rehab to purchase access for windows soon and I'm sure that it'll take 6 months to a year before it's done. Good thing the demo ain't crippled . THe other part of rehab is educating the client. That's where most of them fall short. You have to educate the client on techniques, as well as attitude. He/she must be able to sell themselves before they can. HK> I would think that someone had calculated how many pens a person could HK> screw together in an hour and from that derive a piece fee equal to the HK> Federal Minimum Wage. However, the light house in many ways serves as HK> a sheltered work shop and should not be compared with typical HK> employment. IH> Sigh, this nonsense again. The old "he's not an employee, IH> he's a client undergoing rehabilitation" bullshit. And, of IH> course, since they're not employees, they're not covered by IH> such things as minimum wages, labour legislation, etc. Some IH> agencies in New York were notorious for this type of IH> thing--people spent up to 20 years in the workshops being IH> "rehabilitated". Cute. Yup. Then, there's the old method of queering the deal to say the "client" can't make piece rate. We queer the time study. Make sure that components aren't available to keep the "client" putting them together. Any number of ways to queer a time study. Meanwhile, sighty walks around with the pay, and real benefits, vacation, sick leave, workers' compensation, health benefits. We all know, you've been sold the ACb/Agency line, and you've bought it. Henry I almost hate to hear someone trotting out the old agency line, live from New York City. You brought up some interesting points about minimum wage and those of us who work for ourselves. I've done more than one studio project, that, when you add up all the time I put in, probably paid me less than the minimum wage . My fault, I underbid, or, was into a perfectionist bag enough that I spent the extra time to get it right, and make the client happy. A happy customer is return business you know . I usually learn from those experiences, and factor that in the estimate or bid the next time. Still it's work I enjoy. I would, however, resent going to work for an employer and not having the benefits of: Minimum wage or greater; Health insurance; Pension plan; And, of course, the biggie, a chance for advancement. Do any of the folks at these so-called lighthouses have these? Not hardly. IH> Perhaps _you_ trust the management of such institutions; I IH> think I would side more with Harvey, in automatically IH> distrusting them. Of course you do. You've been programmed to trust whatever the bosses from rehab tell you. After all, they know best eh? You and I've both worked for ourselves, as well as for the man. Would you willingly take one of those jobs at that so-called lighthouse? IH> I see, so the small number of folks they employ, and the IH> fact that they have other problems or disabilities somehow IH> validates the treatment meted out to them? Explain that one away. These folks should be setting good examples for their communities. How about blind folks in management and supervisory positions? Ever hear of that? I'll starve or steal, maybe even sell your kids dope before I'll go to such a place. THe only way I want anything to do with their lighthouses is if I can go there with a bomb in a bag, especially to their board meeting. They've declared economic war on us, for the sake of a few dollars. Let 'em reap what they sow! HK> Why not stand up for those rights you are accused of bashing and HK> complaining about to some of the companies who have some real hiring HK> power? Take a look atyour Parish or city government. They are HK> probably the largest employers in yourarea. How many blind people on HK> their payroll? Instead of slapping around groups who though less than HK> perfect, are trying to do something, get off your duff and pick on an HK> organization that can have some impact on the hiring of blind people. IH> Henry, I will agree with you on this one point--Harvey IH> should make a point of complaining about hiring policies to IH> larger employers. However, this does not invalidate his IH> complaints--the Lighthouse should set an example for other IH> employers, both private and public sector. Let them set a IH> good example. THat they should. BLind people should be in all levels of their operation, not just in direct labor. They should be reaching out to their communities to educate employers. Instead, we've got vested interest, and NIB, with the good old Affiliated Leadership league/nbac AFb combine, again, Live from New York City. Lotsa money changing hands ain't there? How much will you see of it, Henry? WAke up and smell the coffee fella. You may not have your good job in 5-10 years. THen, you might be at the mercy of the same folks you trust. See if they can play puppeteer when your bills ain't paid eh? I've heard of more than one case, some mentioned here in the echo, where you must have the good housekeeping seal of rehab before a prospective employer will even converse with you. When rehab is more interested in running their own manufacturing operation under NIB, whoo's getting ripped off? The blind, of course, and that's what angers me. Education of employers is the key, and we must all do more to achieve that, but rehab, by its verry nature, should be working harder toward this end. Any rehab agency running a sheltered sweatshop is engaging in behavior that could be considered conflict of interest, at best. I call it criminal! We've pushed some hot buttons here for folks such as Harvey and myself. I have nothing resembling brotherly love for the people at National Industries for the Blind or the Nac folks and sweatshop bosses. Tell the guy at the Chicago lighthouse about his subminimum wage, as he operates a punch press with the safety handles held closed by duct tape, to increase his production rate. While he gets his $1.50 per hour, he risks losing fingers every day. Ask him if he'd rather trade his dignity for the loss of a hand or most of it, and slave wages so that he can get an SSI or SSDI check, and live in subsidized housing weith the crackheads and ADC brats. Ask him then about quality of life. If he's somewhat educated at all, he'll tell you there is no quality to his life. If he's not well educated, or has low self-esteem, he'll tell you that he's glad the workshop gave him an opportunity. Opportunity for what? Them to make a profit at his expense, while he risks more than they do. As I said above, crime affords me a better opportunity. AT least if I get busted, Jail provides 3 squares and a warm place to sleep, as well as a chance for me to further my education . I'd turn that direction before I'd show up at the sweatshop.
